Bought a set of Melco axle stands from machine Mart over the weekend and tried to change the oil yesterday but the cheap Hilki trolley jack I have doesn't lift the car high enough. Searched OOF last night for recommendations but those are out of my budget. My budget is max £50
Also bought a torque wrench, mainly for wheel bolts as I have been over tightening them slightly. Tightened the bolts to 110nm which didn't seem tight at all so increased the torque to 140nm but wrench clicked without getting the bolt any tighter. It's my first time using one of these so would like to know what I might be doing wrong.

Outside of your budget, but Arcan XL 3000 is the best sub £100 I've come across, so I bought one.
As my Clarke one is playing up again, I might buy another.
-
110Nm is plenty tight enough. Too tight, and the bolts can shear in use. Been there, watched the NSF wheel roll into the ditch, followed closely by my Ital. Opps.
-
110 nm is correct. Are you sure you have the correct scale?
You want Newton Meters (nm). Not foot pounds (ftlbs) or any of the other numerous measuring scales.
Must be NM.
-
I only tried tightening it to 140nm to 'get used to' the wrench but as said didn't get and more turns on the bolt because the wrench wouldnt let me.
Re. Jack, how much is sub £100 are we talking, a few pounds? :)
Chris, was 110nm for sure

Costco, so £70 shelf price. Plus vat, and membership of £20 if not a member already.

I'm going costco next month for a new jack. More than happy if you want to come along if you aint got a card? You could always purchase ramps. I much prefer these and cost quite bit less if i remember correctly. I think rob g provided me with the link. As for using a torque wrench its easy after a while cos you know roughly how certain levels of torque will feel. However you want to avoid stopping. You want to have a nice clean ark as you come up to the click. Also limit use of extensions where possible

Whilst waiting for a new jack, does your existing one raise the car enough to get an axle stand in place? For an oil change not too much access is required, and is easier with front nearside wheel removed :y

Sadly, jack doesn't raise car high enough to place stands.
Webby, thanks for the offer but I will buy the Sealey jack from Andy C.

Me again.
I had a rethink and want to spend a bit more. I like the look of the Arcan XL30R (the one TB suggested) but I haven't got a costco card and they dont list it on their website. Anywhere else I can buy it for around sub £100? Ebay and the like sell it for £130 +
If I cant find it, may go for this: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j but really want the Arcan!

What I do is to lift the car in stages.
On first lift the jack is on the floor and once raised to it's maximum I place an axle stand underneath, lowering the car onto that. Then I place the jack on a solid piece of wood with other pieces underneath, and raise the car up once more and extend the axle stand to it's next highest pin height. If you need even more height, you just repeat the exercise until there using more solid pieces of wood (pieces of railway sleeper are the best).
You obviously repeat the exercise at the same time on the other side of the car to ensure no movement omn the axle stands. ;)

I cant get the stand underneath at all, even when not on the pin! Need another 50mm or so. Might try some 2x2 I have somewhere. Even if I do manage it, still want the jack for future use really

Well in that case I think you do need that new jack! ;D ;D
