Title: What colour beacons on cars are legal?
Post by: carlos_fandango on 28 April 2008, 18:04:33
Hi Guys, a question for any traffic officer members in the forum.

A mate of mine has bought a stretched LAPD Police Car Limousine, at present it has "blue" beacons on the top, obviously these are illegal for use on public roads, however my question is, would he be legal using red and white beacons? Or if not what would colours would he be able to use legally on the roads?

Cheers Carlos.

Amber only except if he/she is a doctor, green can be used if responding to an emergency.  Anything else is naughty, for one reason or another.....

If its a revolving lamp then at some stage, it will show a white light to the rear....

Lamps should be fixed or hand moveable, unless a warning beacon.

If hand moveable, cannot be capable of movement whilst vehicle in motion.

White to rear is allowed only for worklamps, reversing lamps and similar and, obviously, not for when the vehicle is in forward motion.  Same reasons as red to the front of a vehicle, to avoid confusion....

so, yes, white revolving is nickable.

Being a vet Dad a had a green light which he was allowed to use if needed. I've been given a pair of small but really bright blues that fit behind the grille. I know it's VERY naughty to impersonate a police officer but is it illegal to fit them just for a laugh ie shows meets etc?
They flash left to right, think that's known in the slang as wig wam or something? :-/

Wig wag --- usually applied to headlights flashing in turn. In the some American States they use purple beacons for funeral processions -- could always try those !

I think they are trying to introduce that here.

See loads of cars, vans and trucks with blue lights, some very bright, in regular use these days.

Thought it might be fun to fit them on a hidden switch but no ulterior motive, just a giggle at work in the dark or messing about at a meet etc. I'm sure if i used them on the road i could be in right Barney Rubble but 'twas never my intention to do so.
Simply trying to see if it's illegal to even have them fitted on a civilian vehicle. You see classic Moggie panda cars all fitted up on ebay but they're private cars now.
  I'm gonna fit 'em anyway...break it!!!! :D
