I've never been a fan of de-icer (nasty chemicals!) and prefer a long handled scraper so I don't get cold wet hands! ::)
Often wondered about those little plug in heaters. Are they any good? Can you get one with a timer, so you don't have to nip out in the cold to turn it on?? :)

I only ever use water from the hot tap. NEVER use boiling water from the kettle, as there is a risk of cracking the windscreen with the sudden temperature change.
Also wouldn't use scrapers, as they can scratch the glass. :y
-
At home, start it, then go back in and have a shower and get ready.
-
Heater on Hi,fans on full, drive off with head out the side window until the screen defrosts. :y ;D

My sister in law did that with her Nissan 4x4 and in got nicked, off the drive, and the Insurance refused to pay out....I guess with an Omega though it is OK, swmbo does that and her car is parked on the road..... ::) ::) ::)

I don't do it at work, as thats Bletchley, and its not safe, even in our private carpark.
-
I put the rear window heater on wait for it to defrost then stick the car in reverse and drive backwards ;D ;D ;D
-
Enough hot air without the heater on with swmbo in the car , defrosts a treat ::) :-X

We live in the same, pretty much, crime free village, we think that she had been watched and targeted to steal for spares as they did get 1 door back which is proudly displayed in their place of work... :)
-
For the diseasalists, fit a webasto heater, either a water one plumbed to the coolant, or a warm air one ducted into the car. Had one on the boat, worked a treat but power hungry if left on for a while :-\
Otherwise, I use cold water. Only problem is if temp is well below freezing, it doesn't take long for a film of ice to reform :-\

Was it defrosted?? ??? ;D

Had a Hillman Hunter many moons ago. was in rush grabbed the kettle poured it on the screen. It was -8 and I didn't realise my dad had just boiled the kettle. Also had a toughed screen not laminated. The bang when it shattered was like a bloody 12 bore going off.

You been spying on me ???
-
After last winter I noticed a few pockmarks in the clear laquer on the rear of the bonnet.
I`m almost sure de-icer was the cause. Warm water from the tap sounds the best idea.
-
I start mine up and the heated front screen and heated rear screen/mirror come on automatically, as well as the demister with fan on high coming on automatically (front screen and side windows). 2 minutes and can drive away! :y

+1 - the only effective way to do it.
Although if really cold also leave engine on and blowing as well BUT lock door with spare key just incase a short sighted thief thinks it a Jag ::) ;D
-
Start the car.
Turn on the screen demister and the heater.
Scrape all the glass.
Drive off safely.
Started doing it this way with old cars, but it works just as well on a new one.
-
Spare key to turn on, demist, window heaters and heated seat on. Shut the door, lock with normal key blipper.
Go in get ready.
Unlock with normal key blipper. Remove spare key, post through letter box, go to work in a toasty car. :)
If cought out by unexpected frost, de icer. I hate that job though. :(
-
Ignoring the aspect of being able to see out of the car, I prefer to get in & drive it rather than this idea of letting it warm up slowly on the drive before you set off. The engine will get to its operating temp far faster when being drive (& I don't mean being ragged from cold)

I don't think you can do that? the blipper will not work if a key in the car.... :-\ :-\ I did try this onece but can not recall the exact result.... :-[ :-[

I can confirm - will not work - but in my case when engine is running - but key will lock with door lock (drivers)
-
Many years ago I was dashing around the car spraying de icer on the windows.WhenI got to the front passenger window I didnt notice that swmbo had decided for reasons unknown to wind the window down,so the de icer went straight in her eyes.
As you can imagine, that went down really well. ::) :-X :D
-
Remote start button on the Clifford fob, from the warmth of the living room! By the time I've had a coffee the car is toastie warm. Just have to remember to leave the heater on hot and demist when I park up on a night. And leave it in neutral...

That's when a turbo timer comes in handy.

;D ;D ;D joking..

ok, who is going to share a useful diagram for a remote setup ;D :)

Those little plug in heaters are crap.
Total waste of space. Bought one years ago for my old Cortina, I've had farts that put out more heat.
-
For the past two years, using either 7 Series, or new 5 Series, setup the Timer on the i-Drive and come to a defrosted car, for whenever you've set the heater for :y. Before that, scrapers :).

Trouble is if the car didn't do it, the driver probably wouldn't either :P always quite frightening the number of people that don't :-\
It is a nice touch though :y

The driver (Me) will have too, else I wouldn't be able to see :) :y.

What's that?
:y :y

Not sure tbh :-\ read it on tinterweb and thought it sounded clever ::)
-
Seems to be a lot of drivers just clearing a little post box size hole to peer out of then driving off around here ::) no time for clearing it thoroughly .Luke warm water seems to work but still not sure if this would crack the screen in really Baltic weather :-\
-
Electric fan heater left in the car overnight plugged into an outside wall socket powered through a timer switch. Quarter of an hour before I need the car, heater comes on, defrosts, lovely and warm! :y
Just remember not to slam the door with the wire coming out of it . . . :-\ and remember to pull the plug out of the wall before driving off. :-[

yes, your right, key in lock works.
Point is, car is still locked and warming up. :y

I have always wondered dbug why Ford and of course Jaguar cars like yours have had built in front screen heaters but our Vauxhalls have never had them ::) ::)
Does the Insignia have a heated front window?
Anyway, I have a garage but if my car gets frosted up parked overnight, I just stay in bed longer! :D :D ;)

Wow, how did they manage to scoop that one? :o :o
It is amazing, well to me, that the other manufactures haven't tested that patent in the courts. :D :D ;)
-
I turn the heater to full, blower on max and have a coffee while the engine is warming up, I don`t bother locking it cos the scumbags are still in bed at 5.30 in morning and my stainless locking post will stop them from taking it anyway :y
-
I struggle with the Mundanos with heated screens. The rare convenience (which isn't that convenient, as the engine needs to be running anyway) doesn't outweight the problems.

Mine doesn't, but I've had an Acme Frost Free windscreen fitted. ;)

de icer every time don't really care about paint work or any thing, it's always in boot and saves me running in and out getting water from tap :y
but lizzies right my 93 mondeo had quick clear wind screen and it worked to ;D
-
i always scrape with one of them that has soft rubber one side and a hard plactic edge on the other. De-icer wrecks the wiper blades.

At work, I ask one of the smokers to go down at start it up 5 mins before I go down ::)
Plastic scrapper in emergency.

That was my experience Ian with my Mondeo way back in 1996. Hated the car, but loved that feature :D :D ;)

Agreed... I hate them with a passion and find that the heater elements distort the vision too much, especially at night and in poor visibility

I was going to post that Del but didn't want to appear a snob. ;D ;D
In the Omega I don't do scraping as my little pinkies get cold. ::) I start the engine, heated seat on, sit on hands and wait for screen to thaw. My little body don't like the cold. ::)
Mini's have heated screens if you choose it as an option. :y

No No No No No
NO.
Its a MINI. Not a Mini. There will only ever be one Mini >:( ;D

the only thing was your eyes after a while used to focus on the little lines that ran up the screen :)
annoying but still got used to it :)

Have to say agree with you re the vision issues on Mondeos (SWMBO had a Ghia X Estate a few years back), but have to say don't see this issue on the Jag

My line of thinking, after she has walked the dog............ :y :y :y
-
At home, start it, then go back in and have a shower and get ready.
Too close to the Lakes Estate, that's why ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The Lakes ain't that bad TBH, although does have a reputation. Serpentine Court (the precinct in the middle of The Lakes Estate) is a bit of a no-go area still, though. There are far worse parts of Milton Keynes than The Lakes.
Bit like Blackbird Leys in Oxford, awful reputation, partially because that was where the kids were filmed joyriding in the early 90s, but isn't so bad, never was.

3 cups of tea. then go for my s*** shave and shower, get dressed and by the time in ready to leave I have a bursting bladder of organic de-icer, only problem is it's normally that cold outside I end up with 3 wet fingers as well ::)

Kenlowe Hotstart :y
Ah well, used to on my old MV6 some years ago in pre-OOF days. A wonderful bit of kit that gets talked about on ABS but not OOF for some reason?
-
I like to keep an old bed sheet near where I park and throw that over the screen, under the wipers, in the door.
Or an old newspaper, rubber mat, a sleeping dog, whatever I can find lol
In the morning just lift off :y
-
Or let the wipers wreck themselves on it... ...I change them regularly enough not to worry ;D

I saw this stuff in ASDA today for £2! Anyone used it? Any good?? ??? :)

Warm water.
Dont like the quick clear windscreens due to the defraction grating effect at dawn dusk (the lines I can sort of cope with but not the ligth defraction). That and you see loads of tosser Ford drivers with clear screens and zero visability out the side windows.....it makes for interesting roundabout driving sometimes!
