Title: Errr left Omega ownership ...
Post by: Markie on 28 April 2008, 15:39:12
We mis judged the CDX facelifts MOT - turns out its expired !!!

So its booked into get tested tomorrow - thats another story as i expect a failure on brakes and brake pipes... ::)

Anyway wife has my MV6 and i am on train to and from work...

In a bid to avoid this i decided to go to the local auction on Friday and was, at seperate times, highest and winning bidder on two cars. Both bids were below reserve though so i returned empty handed.

So i really have my heart set on one of two models to replace the MV6 - wife will return to the facelift CDX when mot`d.

The MV6 door rust is annoying and it will need belts changed in December which co-incides with its MOT....

So the question is..

BMW 330 ci Circa 2001 or
Jag X Type 3.0 awd Sport circa 2003 ( and a few thousand extra spare)

Particularly intrested in opinions of anyone who has owned or driven either  :y

Do you like blown transfer boxes?

Do you like uncomfortable seats?

Do you like dash trim which pops up on its own accord?

The Jaguar Mondeo is not very good

My neighbour has got the 2.0 tractor variant. Can tell when he fires it up in the morning! Sounds a good bit less refined than the Massey Ferguson variety but not as good for ploughing.  ;D

What a choice...

BMW = Nice car but complete social outcast.

Jaguar X Type = Mondeo with posh frock.

Not looking at something more Swedish then? ;)
Much more interesting and torque steer sorts the men from the boys!  8-)

Not totally discounted what we have talked about - the problem being availability without needing to take a plane or two days off to pick one up.

Now if you do know of one Dave withing 150 miles of me..... :-X

if you are looking at the BMW do not go for one with the SMG/SSG gearbox......

A friend who has a garage has one down there currently, awful thing, has difficulty in selecting gears and is really clunky and jerky, i took it out once and it felt vary bad indeed.
According to the local BMW specialist the high milers are starting to go like this, that have tried new software, actuators, valves, replaced the oil and even changed the clutch slave cylinder at £550!!!!!!

I've seen the bills, I have dropped my boss off at Jaguar dealers enough while he has had it.

A spare cam sensor is a lot smaller than a spare transfer box

Markie what's your budget?

Guessing if you are looking at 03 plate x type fairly big.

Remember for 03 xtype money you could get 99/00 xj supercharged. Mpg only bit lower.

Some other thoughts from me are:

V8 mg zt
5.7 v8 monaro
Old shape bmw 5 series 540i (4.4 v8)

Both 540 and supercharged xj not affected by new tax rules.

Hmm, choice boils done to:

1) Want to be considered an utter idiot.
2) Want to be called Mondeo Man.

Not much room in a 3 series after living with an Omega. Whatever you go for the economist in me says D.E.R.V.  Then you can go for a drive just for the sake of it and not feel like the office has lost your taxcode and put you on emergency coding.
IMHO BMW better engineered and dealer back up good, Jaguar just sounds better though, that's just the English part of me.

Oh dear, i'm dissapointed. However if you have few grand & want a change do'nt forget Audis. Totally understated (i've got a few quid but do'nt have to shout about it) but really producing some classy motors.
If you fancy a Jag why not a REAL XJ?. Not much room inside but still the best proper Jag & RWD. Like the look of newer Mercs but do'nt know much about them. I like Beemers but the newer ones look pig ugly.
They might be good motors but i get travel sickness just looking at 'em. To sum up it'd be a nice big Audi or the XJ for me. :D

 ;D ;D

I knew it to be a bad idea asking non vx advice  ;D ;D However thanks eevryone for the advice anyway  ;)

I dont care what people call me, not bothered about petrol costs and dont use my car for the family runs as it is, so rear space not a concern  :)

Dont want to go below 3.0litre as i am used to it and dont see the need at this point to go too much higher...

Tunnie....Budget is pretty much whatever takes my fancy within reason but ideally 8k would secure the BMW mentioned in the opening or a little less will secure the newer Jag  ;)

i would be very tempted by a 2000 plate 5 series, with the 4.4 V8 engine in that case...

Hi Markie. As stated on here before i'm no die hard vx fan, i just like Migs. On a lower budget (£2k for example) i'd have a Mondeo over a Vectra any day or a Fiesta over a Corsa, although the Astra wins over the Escort (FWD) all day but then i like the Focus so it's a mixed bag mate & a matter of opinion.
I agree with not caring about fuel costs, what's the point? So to sum up given your budget i'd go for the biggest Audi or Xj i could beat the salesman to a pulp on!!!
When you buy post some piccies, if you love it that's all that matters. :y Guy.

I found the X Type incredibly cramped (I'm 6ft) and more annoyingly the pedals are offset so you can't get comfortable in the seat.

I recently seriously considered parting with the Omega for an S type
2.7TDI Jaguar, Rwd & just under 40 mpg for the manual. But I came to my senses just in time, realising that the Jag couldn't do anything better than the car I already had.
The x type for me was a real no no.
Sometime in the (distant) future maybe......................

If I may add my two pence worth:

Everyman and his dog now drives a bmw, they have just become the new ford cortina.

Jaguar still manages to turn heads, if for nothing but it's rarity factor.

Both cars have image and reliability issues, but just to stand out from the crowd I would have to go with the Jaguar, and for me it would be an S type.

Make sure you get a spare transfer box ready.

If you hear ANY funny noises stop and get the transfer box checked as  they are repairable if you fix them in time. The bearings go then very soon after the gears go.

My bosses cost over a thousand to fix with some assistance from Jaguar.

Search on it.

Oh and good luck

Welcome to the Jag Club!  I have an X, no problem with space (I'm 6'3"), and as for it being a mondeo in a posh frock.  Yeah - I suppose, in the same way that an Omega is a stretch corsa!

Also had no problem with reliability.

Thanks for all the comments folks...And if TB allows i will be sticking around. After all i am awaiting a call from MOT man on the failures of the wifes CDX..

Did my research, aware of the pitfalls of the car and its Ford underpinnings.

But on mid 2003 plate 3.0 Sport and full Jag history ( stamped) including Jag service 400 miles ago, full MOT, new Pirelli tyres all round and TOTALLY unmarked body....

Couldnt let it pass for what i negotiated it down to. That price by the way was significantly lower than a 03 plate Budden Omega  :-/

That is the only problem I found on mine. Changed to Continental - much better and last twice as long.

You need to keep the tyre treads within a few mm of each other to keep the strain off the transfer box.....

Beware the dealers, the Jag is more complex than an Omega with the same standard of technician as Vx........try to find a good small independent and get all the software updated as there are a few known firmware gremlins.

Ow yes, dont ever drive into the back of somebody, no matter how slow because the front end will literally fall off (as happened to me!)
