What does you lot think of Gary Barlow getting a O.B.E? You can take that or leave it! we always say it stands for other buggers efforts! opions on what you think, does he deserve it?
-
Well deserved :y
Robbie did well for himself when he left TT, but Gary was the only one left with talent.
He's put alot of time and effort in to his work, is grounded inspite of his success, and has devoted an awful lot of time and money to good causes on the back of it :y
-
Yep well deserved for a lovely man :-* :-* :y
-
An award for what? a half decent singer >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
The honours systems today is an insult to those who were/ are worthy >:( >:( >:(
-
Thanks Cleggy, was waiting for someone to write exactly what i think! yea agree he has knocked out a few good tunes, maybe has given to charity, but he can afford to, and its probably what most of these goody, goody celebs do to get rid of some money instead of giving it to the tax man! i am waiting to get a reply that will not agree. but hope some will agree, if he was fighting for our country then i would say, he deserves a medal.
-
I understand where you're both coming from :y, but there have been plenty far less deserving than Gary Barlow who have had honours bestowed on them :-\
-
I agree with you, ex taxi al, just wish they knew what hard work is. Our builder deserves a medal! going to drive him to Buckingham Palace to collect one, and me and the wife for putting up with horrible neighbours! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
as far as i can tell hes a waste of a good skin!!!!

ha ha! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

AGREED.
The guy is a second rate song writer, a half decent singer, gives a bit to charity, and organises a pop concert full of second rate artists for the jubilee (for which he was no doubt paid handsomely for. SO WHAT. >:( >:(
He has done nothing out of the ordinary to be honoured, no personal sacrifice, fought for his country, I doubt he and fellows have even entertained our troops. The honours system is a joke, and it's not just him but the rest of the so called entertainment business who really do FA but their job. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Is Barlow part of the human race, I though he came out of the boy band mould (pun intended) :o :o ;D ;D

Jeez you're a load of miserable sods! ::) :P
You may not like him or his work, but at least have the good grace to recognise that through his work he has brought pleasure to and entertained millions over a 20 year period! :y
I'd rather gongs like this go to people like Barlow for doing their job, than faceless Sir Humphries in the civil service or top brass in the military! >:(
-
Fair do`s to the guy, deserves it more than some of the others.
-
now, now, fellas put your handbags away! we all have different opinions, mine just dont match up with most of yours!
fair do, he maybe a good songwriter ect, but if he was gary barlow the ordinary man who collected your rubbish, or fixed your boiler etc, and did charity runs, baked cakes etc, he probably wouldnt want a medal, just the satisfaction knowing he has raised money to help others. :)

Did Barlow ask for a medal then? ???

Rather he had one than Jimmy Saville or any other Nonce that's been Honoured! ::)

20 years ??? and didn't sell as many records as the Beatles, Stones, Who etc. Good god give him a lifetime achievement award as well >:( >:(

Take That started in 1990, was and still is hugely popular! :P Granted the style of music might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the recent Take That tours have been sell outs. :y Thus Barlow has entertained a helluva lot of people over that 20 year period, and I suspect that he will carry on doing for another 20 years or so! :) You never know he might even end up out selling the old codgers! ;)
Yes you can argue that he's only doing his job and it's a fair point. However as I pointed out earlier these honours are dished out amongst the establishment like confetti to people doing their jobs and have these people ever brought any light into the drab drudgery of most peoples lives? I doubt it! ::)
As it goes, I agree with Micheal's point that more ordinary folk should be given honours! There are plenty of unsung heroes out there doing extraordinary things that should be recognised more often! I believe however that there is a procedure for nominating people and maybe it should be better publicised! :)
For the record I am not a particular fan of Gary Barlow or Take That! :P

Actually they ran fron1990 - 1996, reformed in 2006 so only 12 years ( an acquaintance of mine was the first producer of this manufactured boyband), but hey ho if gets an award so what just shows how devalued they have become. :( :( :(
-
Cleggy, i am with you on every thing you say! and yes Barlow didnt ask for a medal, but he could have refused it, next we be hearing Tulisa and him be getting an award for X factor! and lets face it that is more about the judges that the contestants. Oh, so take that have been together 12years?they split up then reformed, like most of these boy bands, westlife etc, terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired! its all about PUBLICITY at the end of the day. Lets give terry wogan one for shaking a bucket in your face for money for children in need, and i think he gets paid for it. ::) ::)

Ah, now The Beatles Cleggy.
They received their MBE's only two years+ since making it big in 1962/63. I loved them, especially Paul, so I never begrudged each of them their award, which of course John Lennon famously sent back to the Palace! ;D ;D

If the establishment want to reward someone for "services rendered" to the country, so be it. Let's face it the British Empire no longer exists, but the establishment still stick to this out of date practice. If that pleases them, so be it. There are many other problems for us, the people, to worry about. ;)
-
If we go by the way the honors system works today, imo he probably deserves it for the work he has done over the last 20 years or so.
If people want to moan about it, wind the clock back to when it all changed (Tony Bliar era iirc) when it was seen as just rewards for kissing the right arse at the right time ;)
Before then, these awards where pretty scarce and ment something.
The common man and woman in the street have never had the national respect that they deserve because they don't drink in the right circles ;)

If I remember correctly Lizzie they got theirs for the contribution they made to British exports, so again in my book not worthy :( :(
Gary Barlow gots his for Conrtibution to the Music Industry, again NOT NOT NOT Worthy :( :( :(
The honours system is now so dishonourable as to be an insult to those worthy individuals who received their award when it meant something >:( and should be scrapped. :y

No he doesn't, his contribution to the music industry is to write a few popular songs and sing in a manufactured boyband. >:( >:( >:(
I think we are both singing out of the same Hymn Book ,just on a different verse ;) ;D ;D
Your last two sentences are on the button :y :y

At the end of the day, he was a spotty faced pretty boy in a boy band who turned out to be a pretty good song writer and due to the plastic culture of pop music nowdays he became famous and again because of this "so called fame" he could influence the media and used it to promote good causes threw his charity work and fair play to him.
In other words ............. he just got on with his job :)
The OBE is (or should be) a award for people who go about there life or job in a good way, going well beyond the call off duty to help people who are less well off in life then themselfs for little or no reward.
I don't think he has kissed anybodys arse to get there.
He basicly just got on with the cards he was delt
You have never heard me sing and believe me, you don't want too :-X ;D ;D

The Beatles (the original Boy Band) were only together for 10 years, yet McCartney despite multiple drugs convictions got an MBE and a Knighthood for doing his job and struts around at every national event like he's some sort of elder statesman...... :-\

The Beatles were a GROUP that could play instruments, got together, slogged it round the clubs in England and Germany learning their craft. Lennon and McCartney are possibly the worlds greatest songwriters. They set the standard for others to try and emulate and failed with a possible few exceptions.
Boy Band MY ARSE ::) ::) ;D ;D
They were not talentless pretty boys put together by some impresario with a market machine >:( >:( >:(
Whether or not they should receive awards is up for disscussion ???
-
Far from deserved... I couldn't believe it when I read it...
The only reason he has got it in reality would be for the Queens Jubilee Concert which was full of 2nd rate singers (face it the pop music industry is manufactured twaddle, that all sounds very similar)...
He has done some stuff for charity, so what, haven't we all??? Ulitmately he has just been doing hs job...
There are other far more deserving than many of those who have/will receive(d) honours...

No need to bring your arse into it Cleggy!! ::)
Of course they were a Boy Band!! They were 4 young boys who got together and formed a band which quite probably wouldn't have been half as successful without the guidance of Brian Epstein and George Martin! :) Things worked a little differently all those years ago that's all..... ;D ;D ;D
With the hindsight of history, The Beatles were a pretty over rated Boy Band as well!!!!!!!! :-X ;D
-
we seem to be moving away from the issue of Gary Barlow, and his O.B.E,,,,,,,,Oh bloody ell it should stand for!
Leave the beatles alone, they will go down in history and will never be forgot! ooops i moving away from the issue as well!
final word, i think these medals should be abolished, so TAKE THAT! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Manufactured Boy Bands of today are not worthy enough to piss in the same toilet as the Beatles, Stones, Who, Small Faces ETC ETC. Groups with musical talent that grew organically. :y :y
The Beatles had paid their dues and were popular before Epstein and Martin, and so were the Stones before Oldham :y :y :y
Overated boy Band MY ARSE, has your hearing got a malfunction ;) ;D ;D ;D, and things didn't work differently then remember the Monkeys the first plastic manufactured group singing Neil Diamond songs or was it the backing singers and studio musicians ::) ::) ;D ;D
Take That have performed together for 12 years, who will remember then in another 40 let alone them still performing like the Stones :y :y
As for awards they are what you get when you cross a Bulldog with a Shitzu ;D ;D ;D

Those groups earned their stripes with hard graft, sleeping in stinky vans and hostels, with terrible food. They grafted for their fame, and their very real talent shone through 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I do sometimes shudder when Paul McCartney tries hard to be a Beatle again ( he was never a true rocker; John Lennon filled that slot R.I.P.) but the stones can still give it some :-* :-* :-*

I hope that today's acts will have the sense to retire gracefully and not try to desperately hang on to their youth like these ridiculous old rockers.... :P ;D
They'll not last that long. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not really Cleggy ;), but I don't blame these youngsters for having a go at the shows like X-Factor, because if they get lucky they're set for life. :y Take the X-Factor boy band One Direction, you've got a bunch of boys thrown together by the show's producers, marketing bods or whoever and they have a look and sound that appeals to a set of people and their records sell! :)
Those lads are no doubt making silly money and having the time of their life!! 8) Good on them I say, make the most of it because you're right in one thing they may well fade back into obscurity when the next X-Factor act comes along, and if they do; I hope that they are getting the right advice so that they're set for life financially!! :y
and I still think that Gary Barlow is worthy of his OBE! :P even if all he's done is be part of a boy band, entertained millions over a 20 year period, and organised a concert for the Queen with a load of second rate has beens like Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John!! ::) ::) ::) One ridiculous old rocker that I do like is Sir Tom Jones OBE, now that boyo can still hold a note!!! :y :y :y
and another thing..... What the .... is that Gangnam Style shite all about??? :-\
