Title: cold air from heater on 2.2 omega
Post by: bereman on 22 November 2012, 15:30:02
My first post so please bear with me.

The heater on the car does not deliver hot air even when the gauge shows normal engine temp. The air con works and blows cold when switched on. I think it is the electronic version as it is a 2002 car.

Will connecting to a diagnostic reader tell me anything? If not any suggestions welcome as it is starting to get cold out there.

Thanks

Assuming engine running & up to temperature. On the Climate Control panel, press the 'Auto' and 'Off' buttons simultaneously for about 3-4 seconds or until you hear a sound like p*ssed off wasps (this is the actuator motors resetting). If still no different, check if both passenger & drivers footwells are affected or if only one side is getting heat. If one side is getting heat but not the other then have a look here, the fix is the same for either side:...

If still no/very little heat on both sides then the heater matrix may be blocked or airlocked. Try this:....

You should also check the operation of the Heater Bypass Valve by setting the heating controls to full heat with fan on maximum and then removing the thin vacuum tube from the top of the HBV & blanking it temporarily with a small diameter bolt. On a 2.2 the HBV lives below the heater matrix bulkhead pipes on the left hand side of the engine bay just to the right of & below the brake servo and looks a bit like a  black plastic Starship Enterprise :D
Hope this helps  :y

hi , i have a problem with my heater aswell, i can only get cold air , have been told that there is a flap that shuts off the cold air and lets hot air in that is not working, been told to get to this "FLAP" in the dash board and move it manually by hand to allow the hot air in.
is this the same thing as the hbv, and if i do this will it cause any long term damage to anything else.

First thing to check, before you start messing about, in the engine bay, with the engine nice and warm, are the pipes that go back into the passenger compartment really warm ??

If not, the HBV (Heater Bypass Valve) might be stuck closed ..it is at the back of the engine and looks like the Startrek Enterprise !!! there is a small vacuum pipe leading to the top of it, remove that pipe and blank the end with a small bolt. See if the pipes now get hot. If they do then you'll have heat .. :)

Next thing to sort is WHY the HBV was closed .. but you do not need to rush on that .. just leave it working with the vac pipe disconnected :)

If the pipes that go into the passenger compartment are HOT and it still blows cold, then think about the flaps .. :)
