Evening peeps,
went in to vauxhall today to book the car in, 2001 2.6 saloon, for its birthdAY PRESSIE OF A NEW TIMING BELT £348 FITTED NO PROBS I SAYS.
While i'm here Mr Vauxhall man how much for both of my rocker cover gaskets?
Wait a minute and i'll just check he says, upon return with a somewhat big smile........in excess of £360 Mr Cormie as the plastic covers warp and it's best to renew covers and gaskets........oh and there will be the standard 5 hours of labour to do them................
Firstly folks do they warp?
secondly how long to do them myself?

Fek me what a load of shite!
Geniune gaskets yes, with correct sealant. But its total crap that you need to replace the covers too.
Name and shame dealer please :)
-
When I was at my local dealer re the aircon issue, they did a 'health check' type thing.
I also was told timing belt and gaskets would need done, though no mention of changing the actual covers. Their quotes for this were nowhere near what you have been told though.
I'd put that particular birthday present on hold for the time being :y
-
No they don't warp, tell them to fit gaskets only. I'm sure the part numbers are on here somewhere.
It's not too hard diy though, tbh.
-
And thats a ridiculous amount of money for a cambelt kit change. ;)

Absolutely :y

Indeed... You could drive to or pay fuel for one of the experienced guys from here to come and do both jobs for not a lot more than the cambelt price from Vx ;) ::)
-
Not too bad as a dealer price I thought, but can cirtainly be done cheaper by some distance.
-
I supplied my own cambelt kit (from Andyc) and the dealer here fitted it for £90 inc VAT. WJ King Vx. Just had a service and official stamp for £60 as well. Cannot fault them, as long you dont let them take control of whats being done. Although they did offer a replacement tyre for £161 which I kindly declined.

That's an awesome price for labour! How long did it take?

That is what I thought Chris :y
I have been asking around out of interest to see how much I would have to pay for a "professional" outfit to take on the work of A) Changing the cam belt and tensioner's B) replacing all other belts C) fitting a new water pump D) washing out the coolant system and replacing with a 50/50 mix.
Some garages shuddered when I asked them to quote, not wanting to do the work. An average price for these was between £600-£800 all parts and labour.
My friendly Vx main dealer, who I would provide the parts to, buying them from their parts department at trade- £240 -, quoted £356 for just labour. So again, all in around £600!
It just shows what you will be charged if you take your V6 miggy into a garage for this work. It would seem the crippler of the situation is the labour / time the garage's give to do this work which they know for them is lengthy and not straightforward compared to other jobs they can do! ::) ::)
-
I would expect about £356 if they were doing the covers to???
-
The retail price of the cambelt kit is around £180 IIRC, and most dealers outside London are going to be around the £100ph mark, so £350 is in the right ballpark.
Its just us OOFers know better, don't we :)
Camcovers rarely warp, a common myth put about by people who are either too incompitent or too lazy to fit them correctly.
-

Not with Vx and many garages down here apparently! ::) ::)
In fact I can hardly believe the very cheap prices quoted above in other posts. They are at amateur levels, and I wish they were down South!! ::) ::) ::) The only problem I would worry about though is have they done them correctly with a guarantee if all goes wrong? ???
-
Approx £100 for belt & tensioners, then pay a good mechanic £150 (maybe less) to fit them ,or DIY for £0. ;)

You are about right albitz, although my quote including the water pump, new bolts, and a flush out with a refil of coolant. However, once I pay £100+ for a cam locking kit, which I will use once in 4 years........that is my dilemma and does make me think twice. ;)
-
New Bolts ?
Coolant,about £15.
Water pump - if you shop around,SKF from fleabay around £20.
Locking kits can be hired, borrowed or stolen. :D

Yes, bolts for the water pump and I believe replacing with genuine Vx parts Albitz, but I know I am paying over the top in doing so.
As far as hiring the cam locking kit, I am still looking around here for someone who does offer a genuine Vx pattern kit. ;)

Its about an hour to do V6 cambelt, add 20m of so for coolant pump and associated coolant drain/refill.
So around £60-£90 at most non franchised garages

That is the crucial factor in the garages quotes I have asked for. They work on about 4-5 hours, so at Vx @ £70 minimum per hour..............!! ::) ::) :(
-
It takes me about 4 hours, but im a rank amateur and take my time and recheck my work several times as its such a critical job.
A "pro" mechanic shouldnt take more than a couple of hours, but of course what they quote is probably very different to the time they spend doing it.

;D ;D ;D ;D yes it probably covers tea breaks and a lunch!! ::) ::) ;)

I've done a couple now. Picked up a second hand locking kit. Takes me around 4 hours but I'm no full time mechanic. It's not to bad a job to do just time consuming as a lot has to come out the way first.

Would like to be a fly on the wall to see them doing the job ..I know i have loads of paperwork from the previous owner who spent loads on labour and service items from garages from new , quite interesting reading through them but then he probably never knew about oof then :)

doz can I ask how much you paid for that locking kit, and from where? ;)
-
You're welcome to borrow my locking kit if it would help.
Got a copy of the OOF DVD too. I'm in Chatham, so not far from you.
Changing the belt isn't too bad a job, although I wouldn't like to do it in a front wheel drive car.
Once you've done a couple it shouldn't be too hard to do it a couple of hours. Half the job is the dismantling required to get to the front of the engine, plus reassembling all the junk when you're done, and dealing with the broken rubber mounts.
It could be worse; Renault quote £1200 to do a V6 cambelt in an Avantime, even though the belt kit costs about the same, because the factory method is to remove the engine!

For what it's worth, my local Vx advertise labour at £40 per hour for older cars. They are apparently trying to compete with the unfranchised garages :-\

Thanks for that NicK :y :y
I'll give it some thought as the change will be due soon.

Bought my cam locking kit off ebay for £40 a few years back. I've used it 4 times on our Omegas (so £10 per belt change!)
Cam belt kits from buypartsby @ less than £70 :y
A couple of hours work - diy no cost
QH water pump < £30
-
I usualy charge about forty pounds for cambelt and water pump labour only.

Agreed. We're very lucky on OOF* that there's enough support to do the job yourself, or members who'll do it for you. Don't waste your cash, find a local. You'll have enough left over to buy bacon and buns also...
*which is fairly unique, that the number of keyboard warriors is much lower than on other single-marque forums.

Thats quite a bit seeing as you probably do it in 20 minutes :D :D ;D

Is that really a lot?
Remove the VAT and it's £200.
Cost of the parts at retail prices? 6 plugs at £3.5 each and £70ish for the gaskets leaves £109
That would leave 2 hours at £54 an hour which doesn't seem too bad to me.
Luckily enough mine don't leak, but I'm surprised by the cost of the gaskets rather than the cost of changing them. Especially when aftermarket gaskets are much more sensibly priced.
I know the consensus here is OE only, but there are thousands of these engines about, and they can't all leak!
