Went to get some diesel this afternoon as was on the red light. ::) As I started filling I was looking at the advert on the other nozzle on the pump and suddenly realised that I was looking at the black nozzle!! :( Doh Doh Doh!!!! :-[ Luckily I'd only put about a litre of petrol in so I brimmed it with diesel and have got away with it!!! :y
What a complete and utter numpty though!!! :-[ I was dead embarrassed, but the girl behind the counter laughed and said "Don't worry it happens all the time" I was in South Wales so a bit too far away for LazyDocker to come to my aid!! ;D

Indeed... Easy to do and the reason I'm in business ;) Depending where in S Wales I might have been able to get someone out to you though ;)
FWIW, one of the other franchisees did the same in his van :o :o ;D ;D

That's funny LD!!! ;D ;D ;D I told a mate and he said " Aah I've done it twice now!!" :o and he got someone out to drain his tank both times as he'd filled it!! ::) ;D

Best give your mate our number ::) ;D

why can't they think of a simple system to stop people mis-fuelling,as in the pump shouting diesel going in or something like that

I thought there were differing size nozzles / filler caps to reduce this - you can put petrol in a diesel but not put diesel in a petrol....... :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
That's what the link above yours is all about ... it's all about different size nozzles.... what they conveniemtly forget to say is ..... The big one won't fit in a small hole .. but a small one WILL fit in a big hole ..
and there is little that can be done ... except .. and this idea would work except that there are far too many existing cars ...
Square nozzle - Petrol low octane
Round nozzle - Petrol high octane
Diamond nozzle - Diesel
simple but will never happen :)

That is about an accessory you can buy and fit, I was talking about standardized differing sizes, lead free petrol being a slimmer nozzle than Leaded or diesel........... :y :y

But if you're determined enough you'll still do it ;) Trust me, we've been out to several vehicles with this exact device fitted and drained them after misfulleing :-X ::)
Some Fords (and LR/Jag) have a device fitted in the filler neck that is supposed to prevent it but, again, we still go out to many of them ::)

The petrol industry have already done it once (Leaded and Unleaded petrol nozzles)... Why should they pick up the tab for it again? ???
Mind you, it's amazing how many petrol cars we go out to (with the smaller filler neck for unleaded nozzles) that have been filled completely with Diesel :o :o I suppose if you are determined enough you will manage :-X ::)

But they did it badly, by staying with simply different diameter round nozzles ... as I said .. small one goes into big one with ease. If they had done it PROPERLY and changed the shape square/oval/triangular/diamond whatever then the problem would be well on the way to being alleviated.... only "legacy" vehicles would need an adaptor .. :)

Not really... When they changed them Diesel was for busses and lorries... There were very few cars running on diesel ;)
Equally, the situation would have been the same then as it is now... The entire countries petrol stations and every car on the road would have to change at the same time... It's just not practical ;)
Anyway... I don't really want it changed ::) ::)

Indeed ;D ;D ;D
TBH, I know my business has a limited life span but I don't see any magical cure to people putting the wrong fuel in within the next 10-15 years so should (hopefully) see me through my working life :y I'll certainly be keeping my eye on the ball though ;)
-
Entwood is along the right lines with the square, round and diamond nozzles and what they could do is all new cars have the correct socket for the fuel nozzle. The new nozzles would be small enough to fit in older cars which would gradually disappear as the vast majority of cars in the UK are under 10 years old...
But then when you consider the costs involved to save the numpties it's just not worth it IMO! You can't legislate against stupidity! and we'll keep LD busy!! :y

I have to say that in all the misfuels that I have dealt with(theres been a few ::)) its always been petrol in a diesel and never the other way round ???

I have to say that in all the misfuels that I have dealt with(theres been a few ::)) its always been petrol in a diesel and never the other way round ???
It is predominantly Petrol in Diesel :y
Out of around 70 jobs this month I think only about 9 or 10 were the other way around ;)
Mind you, the new micro sized cars no longer have the smaller filler neck as by not tooling it and fitting it they can reduce the build costs so we are getting more of them every month

So about 5 jobs per working day..... :o :o :o Maybe I should be looking at a career change.... :D :D :D

Not 5 per working day... We're a 24/7 business ;) That is over 2 areas though ;) But it seems to have averaged quite well across the 2 :y

I nearly had a friend of mine call you out for 'veg oil in a diesel in cold weather' .. I bet that would have been 1 out of 70 ;D

Just light a fire under the tank. :y if the whole car goes up, well, it was only a tractor. ;D
-
;D Didn't think of that.. his method to get it all out was quite ingenius I thought, although it meant draining the full tank;
(This is on a 2.2DTi btw) Popped the inspection cover over the fuel pickup/return pipes in the boot, attached a length of hose to the feed pipe and put the other end in a jerry can (or, knowing him, a bucket) and hooked the compressor up to the return pipe..

10-15%petrol mixed in should sort that problem. :y

I think I mentioned before about a pump add-in that is part of an EU research project that utilises the pump return line (the pipe that senses the fill indication) to detect the fuel type in the tank before starting the pump.
Question is, will the fuel companies adopt it....

I doubt misfuelling costs them anything. Quite the contrary, in fact, so I guess that's a no. ::)
What we need is a system in the car being able to sniff the nozzle that's just been inserted. ;)

Agreed... But not for the next 15 years or so please :-X ::)
