Morning, I have the above phone for the last 2+ years it has had the software upgraded about 6 months ago because it wouldnt turn on.locked up on start up screen.
Anyway the problem I have now is that it when I go to the phone and press a button to use the phone it does not come on so I have to take the battery out and turn the phone back on. The question is why. Software or hardware fault. The weird thing is that you dont get the turn off tones so i think it is locking up. Also the battery is full.

maybe try a factory reset on it

As said, try a factory reset.
Try and back up what you can if possible if not then tranfer what you can to your SD card if one is present. Also would be tempted to remove the SD card whilt doing a factory restore.

Could be, given its age, the battery is starting to go.

most samsungs have this problem.. especially after a full charge.. :(

I agree it sounds like a battery problem.

I've had the i9000 for about the same amount of time.
Pop the back cover off and wedge a bit of paper inbetween the battery and the case so it forces the battery onto the terminals ;)
Fixed the same problem for me :y
Just beware of your back cover splitting if the paper wedge is too large ;)

may be solved your problem.. but I dont think this is the main reason in general.. :-\
mine doesnt do normally.. but only after a full charge and not everytime after its charged
and taking the battery out solves the problem..

and one more note which may be a clue, I bought a new battery.. it now very rarely hangs..

What build code of Android are you on?
Install BetterBatteryStats (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hc2tzdmVuLmJldHRlcmJhdHRlcnlzdGF0cyJd) and CPU Spy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy.realgpp&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5idmFsb3Nlay5jcHVzcHkucmVhbGdwcCJd)
If it is a software problem, it will soon be apparent.
