Title: Maybe a dumb question... what does that little snowflake button actually do?
Post by: llewellyn237 on 06 December 2012, 08:16:39
I'm guessing it tries to reduce wheel-spin on ice?  :-\

It reduces the torque from the gearbox by "locking out" first and second gear.

In other words, the car pulls away in 3rd with lots of slip from the Torque Converter, which gets the ATF nice and warm ::) :y

It also disengages automatically above 30(?) mph ;)

this snow button I used only once in many years (later I discard the stupid autobox anyway) .. as I generally use winter tires..

but TC off is more useful.. especially when you are stuck in sand, mud and snow..

My Merc's auto box has a switch with W and S and when I first got it I assumed that S was sport mode a la Omega, so I kept it at the W position, but couldn't understand why the car was so gutless....  :-\

Until I Please read the manual and realised that S was in fact Standard mode and W was Winter mode!!  :-[  Doh!!!!  ::)  ;D

W modes apparently sets you off in 2nd.

My Merc has C & S which is 'Comfort' & 'Standard' ........ I've tried to detect e difference - but can't  :-\
