I buy the vx stuff on trade club, its very good and cheap plus it works to silly low temps even at 25% concentration plus unlike much of the cheap stuff, it doesn't grow in the summer

but as Mark says, it's the cheapo screen wash that tends to block your washer pump filter with a microbiological slime  ;)

I get the Makro own brand when its on offer.  Generally run it 75/25 most of the year but go 50/50 about now and, if its really cold/snowy/ use it neat.  Genrally a couple of quid a gallon when on offer.  I have prob about 6 gallons or more in reserve on the shelf at any one time and really lets the kids take the piddle - untill they need some for their cars!!

Irrespective of which addative you use, make sure its concentrate and not ready use.  At least that way you can smel, its either neat or almost neat....   :)

To stop the slime in washer bottles put a cup full of meths in the washer throughout the summer.
.
As a warning that slime can contain legionnaires or other nasty germs.so be carefull.

I have bought the cheap diluted stuff before and a lot of the times it has frozen either in the wash bottle or in the pipes to the jets  :( So ill be looking at the concentrated stuff , although a bit dearer its worth the extra  :y

Post by: TheBoy on 08 December 2012, 10:35:39
Never buy pre mixed, always concentrate, and use the correct concentration.

I tend to use GM (bit foamy on PFL headlights) or the cheap Holts stuff when Costco have it on offer. Neither seem to cause problems (beyond the GM 5l bottle spout design).

Tend to buy mine in Makro too... It's often on BOGOF at various prices (cheapest was £1.99 for 5L) and normally stock up. Mind you, I'm almost out ::)

Trip to Makro tomorrow then ::) :D

I find the vx stuff leaves chalky marks when it dries out. :-\

Carplan (and another make, Holts? ) at macro under bogof. I came away with about 8 5litre bottles of concentrate for about £15 last time. Can't remember exactly. I'm only now on my last bottle, must have been two years ago, and it goes in both our cars obviously.

No freezing issues, no goop in the bottle as the top hat filter is perfectly clear. And no residue on the screen.

Its good stuff, but I found on the MFL headlight washers, used to leave streams of foam down the side of the car, esp in winter (presumably due to stronger mix). Doesn't seem to do it on FL headligght washers, no idea why  :-\

Failed.

Washers froze on the way in this morning. And once you've pressed wash wipe theres no stopping the wipers. Slight visibility issues. ::)

Lickily I had a bottle of water in the car. Window down, sploshed the windscreen, and away.

Must have had a brain fart last time I filled it up, as I noticed the outside tap left on, hose under full pressure and frozen solid. So that'll all be f@cked when it thaws out.

Arse. Failed. :(

I did that last year only I didn't notice until it thawed out and I arrived home to a geyser of water spraying from the garden tap..
