I'm going for a new oil change this week, has to be National again as apart from being very cheap their 'mechanic' over-tightened the filter IMHO despite me saying not to. So he can undo it.
One query, has anyone ever taken the flush option (£8 more)? Normally I wouldn't dream of adding flush mix to my oil but if they are going to drain the oil, replace it with flushing oil, drain that then add new oil and filter (i.e. two changes of oil) I could easily be pursuaded. I can't find out from their website but what I suspect they actually do is add a flush mix, run the engine a bit and then just change the oil as normal, i.e. only one change. Is that what they do?

So they cocked it up last time you took it to them, and you're going to reward them with repeat business? :o
And no, they won't do two oil changes, they probably won't add anything, just charge you more.
DIY Or get a competent mate to do it for beer money.

If I do it myself or take it elsewhere and the filter just rotates it will be hard to get National to fix it even though they cocked it up. If they find that problem I'll show them the last oil change receipt. Anyway I can't buy 6 litres of oil and a filter for the price they charge to do it, plus it's cold on the street in December.

Unless your engine is in a real mess i:e your oil is thick sludge, don't have the flush it can cause problems and you are just better off changing your oil and filter again after a 500 mile stint that will clean things out good enough

Never use flush unless you plan to then remove the sump and clean the oil strainer. As for the price and the statement regarding not being able to buy the oil for that piece, ask yourself........why?

For £25 I'll swap your oil, filter and check your breathers are clean (Genuine Vx oil, not that castrol crap)

We pay about £1.30 a litre, and that's only a 200l drum. Add in a filter at £1(ish), and that makes the consumables cost of an Omega oil change £8.50.
Buying in bulk makes a huge difference!

I'd rather the cash goes here than to National and don't doubt the service will be a lot better (I forgot to mention National left the filter slowly dripping last time, I lost 1 litre of oil along the A3 mostly on the road, some as smoke). They blamed a faulty filter seal. I had to ask for the litre of oil back in my spare can.
I've PM'd guffer.
Still intrigued as to whether National really do a double change for the 'flush' or just bung in some chemical and single change it.

The key point is that you can only get a basic oil for that price even in bulk (which seems to make not nearly as much difference as you would expect because its not really bulk, its still pretty small quantities)

Well, it's 5w30 fully synthetic, which I find hard to call basic. But you're right, my point was even a small quantity like 200l(which lasted us less than a month) is much cheaper than buying it in 5l containers. And that is what makes the £25 oil change possible.
Personally, I've never found any difference between brands and used cheap diesel spec 20w40 oil on any solid lifter engine for years. That's because I simply took it off the shelf at work. It's only the last 3 cars - a 525, Legnum and the Omega - where I worry about the oil spec as they all have hydraulic lifters.
Nor can I see any reason to change it as often as many of the members here; I thought the whole point of semi/fully synthetic oil was that it stayed in grade for longer? Which makes changing it every 3000 miles an extravagance. For all the fretting on here about oil changes, I'm surprised that no-one has suggested having the old oil analysed. 10 -12,000 or annually(whichever comes first)has always worked well for me, and I'm not likely to change now. That was the case when I was doing over 30,000 miles a year which meant 3 changes every 14 months, or the less than 10,000 that I do now which means once a year. It's due at the end of January, and so far the level hasn't changed since I last did the job, and it's still clean and clear. Which is good enough for me!

Genuine oil and filter less than £15, so not that big a difference. £7 is a small price to pay for piece of mind imho :-\
