The old auxilary belt shreaded last night so I put a new one on this morning, but the one I have is too wide for the tensioner pulley.
I 've had to leave it until later to get to work,
But I was wondering................ is it the wrong belt?? or could the tensioner pulley somehow been damaged as the old belt threaded, can this happen?
Any ideas welcome.

sounds like you have the wrong belt tbh.
-
If the belt shredded as a result of tensioner seizing it is likely that your tensioner has partly disintegrated - check it carefully! This happened on my old Elite and what was left of the tensioner was approx half the thickness of the replacement.
If the belt is correct width for all the other pulleys then thats likely to be your issue ;)

That sounds like my problem Dbug,
the car is over at a friends 20 miles away, so I cannot check it tonight, but I guess I need a new tensioner.
Are these Main dealer only items, or can you pick up aftermarket ones?

Cheap enough from main dealer .. but make SURE you only but the tensioner wheel and NOT the whole damn caboodle ... providing your mounting bracket is still intact of course.
Changing is simple . just undo the centre bolt against the spring tension and replace the wheel ... I've done it on both mine now as the wheel made lots of funny nasty noises ... if you need a part number yell and I'm pretty sure I can find it eventually ..... :) (of course I'll only have the 3.2 part number now ... but I "think" they are the same )

Tensioner wheel only was about £24 last time I bought one - 5 minute job to fit :y

It was the tensioner wheel as Dbug suggested, cheers mate.
When I took it off the engine and compared it with the replacement, all that was left was the inner bearing, the plastic bit had completely worn away!
I phoned the local Vauxhall dealer and was told you cannot just buy the wheel anymore, you need the complete thing, which was going to be 80 quid plus VAT!!
But I managed to get one from the breakers off an old Vectra for a fiver.

Rubbish
I've bought just the wheel for both my Omega's ...
part no 9157962 44L3 Pulley £24.38 including VAT (used trade club card so got a discount)

Didn't know you had another one Nige, do tell, or have I missed it?
-
Glad to have helped - as said Vx dealers try to sell the whole bit - but if you give them the part no. above you will get just the tensioner pulley :y
