Title: Anyone driven to Europe recently?
Post by: tunnie on 29 December 2012, 09:27:25
Keep seeing those breathalysers in Halfords, £5.99 for 2. That said not sure if trade card gets a discount, but was wondering how much they are on the ferry?  :-\

I'm not spending much time on road in France, but want to be legal as soon as I drive off the boat.

I didn't need them, as I went just before it came in on 1st July.

Its £5.99, why take a risk on the hope is 3p cheaper on the ferry. Bloody student mentality ;D

Reading up on it, they were saying more like £1 each at petrol stations, hence asking  :)

We go to see jolly foringer on a regular basis, the breathalyser law in france has been shelved untill September 2013,BUT some gendarmerie will try to enforce it for the cash,.
. We have in our trucks a complete euro kit in a small zippey bag, contains first aid kit,bulbs,triangle,hi-viz and fire extinguisher and 2 breathalyser..
. They are available on ebay
. We get stopped more by customs than gendarmes.
Always found being polite and civil, and speaking ones best school boy french helps, and offering to buy a coffee. ;)

Just buy them and you have it already... Even at full price it's £6 FFS, that's less than 2 pints or a take away ::) ::)

The French Traffic Police are often to be found hanging around by the first motorway toll booths on the A26 out of Calais.  They like to pick on the British registered cars as it's easy pickings!!  >:(

If you do that it will avoid the Austrian roads too ;)

Anyway... For where you're going I'd go Dover-Dunkirk and then through Belgium ;)

Done that crossing found it too long. Calais run is quicker & cheaper, distance to Dunkirk easily made up in car.

Aiming for Luxembourg City as an over night stop, so out of ferry that no tolls option will be ticked  :)

I doubt the accuracy is up to much, but it is a legal requirement to carry one regardless (along with a Hi-Viz, triangle, and lamp kit).

The legal limit in France is almost half what ours is at 50mg per 100ml of blood, which equates to about half a pint of kangaroo piss strength lager.
If you are just over the 50mg, it's an instant €135 fine along with 6 points and you won't be allowed to move until under the limit.
Anything over 80mg will more than likely see you in jail (the frogs have quite severe views on drink/drive), along with a huge fine.

If you happen to be involved in an accident while over the limit, you're f***ed.

I go over quite often. Sometimes to Holland, Belgium, or Germany, sometimes just for a days shopping and wine-stock-up.

Bit strange that everyone talks about the ferry. Never use it, always the Chunnel, cheaper, quicker, more convenient.

Dover - Dunkirk ? If it was cheaper then fine, but it's not, and dunkirk is only about 30 minutes North of Calais. Went over just before Xmas. Over on friday and back on saturday evening. Train £51 total return. Buy enough beer and wine and you get that back in savings. If you smoke ( I don't) and go to Belgium, 45 minutes from Calais, get it back very easily.

Cannot take my 2.2 down the tunnel.

Besides, I prefer the ferry. Stretch my legs, get some fresh air. Watch White cliffs get smaller and smaller , then get greasy breakie.

Time all that's done, it's docking and I'm fresh for Europe blast :)

The toll roads are good if you want to get down south QUICK..I generally take the old RN`s, not quite as fast but good direct roads, straight as an arrow generally, and alot better scenery.
You just cant beat those avenues of trees that line the side of them, magic.. :y

In the grand scheme of things Dover-Dunkirk takes the same time as Dover-Calais... Quicker load and unload, 2 Hrs on the boat but 30mins further along the way you are heading ;)

As for the tunnel... Apart from the fact you can't take LPG powered vehicles, I hate it. The ferry is part of the holiday for me, especially as I do all the driving, and can be had for as little as £19 (occasionally £10) each way when booked in advance, which is what your quoted tunnel price was :y plus they are generally more flexible if you want an earlier/later boat :y

Take some time to plan the route... Best way is via Belgium, not down through France ;)

Depends where you want to go... I don't see the point in going over to Calais... Might as well just go to the local supermarket as it's over priced and too touristy! If I go to Cheese land I want to go to some smaller places (normally) and always to Belgium, which is 15 mins from Dunkirk ;)

Of course, if you like using the tunnel then it's no issue ;) But I can't stand it and will never use it again unless I have no choice, bunch of lying, money grabbing, tossers  :o

Sadly, thats not Frenchies thinking. Its a requirement to have one, even if you are T-total.

Given they are in more trouble than we are, you'd think the French would do all they can to increase tourist numbers.

Yeah thats what Google is suggesting, but tbh, I'll just follow SatNav after the Ferry, with no-tolls option ticked.

Just checking, its 25 mins ish to Dunkirk from Calais, so guess as you say its all much the same. Got a discount code for DFD Seaways, their Ferries tend to be lot newer than P&O.

The concept of not having half a bottle of wine with every meal, let alone being teetotal, is completely alien to the French. In fact, seeing how my french colleagues approach the subject of drink driving, I wonder how rigourously  their low limit is enforced, when you're not a tourist. :-X

Bit of a bold statement. Britain is in the clag like the rest. Its day of reckoning will come
I do agree with you over welcoming tourists. However the cutting down on road deaths is something the EU has been plugging away at for nearly ten years now with member countries introducing more measures. In Spain there has been a dramatic reduction this year. No one can afford fuel to drive around!

Dfds crossing to dunkirk is longer,if you use the other mob out of calias that use to be sea france, wont ever get on them froggy boats again, got food poisoning suffered for a week. We have to use the train now unless its to bizzy. absolutely crap the Train but quicker if theres no que,
Use toll roads as they are quicker, just slow down for the tag to beeb at the barrier, ;D

DFDS also do Dover-Calais if you prefer. I don't use P&O as I have used DFDS (or Norfolk Line as they were) for years and generally had very good service. In fact, I started using NL when they first accepted the paying public in addition to freight as I'd always had good experiences with freight crossings :y :y

In fact, I proposed to the current Mrs LD on a Norfolk Line ferry as we were entering Dunkirk at sunset :y :y

As I live 45minutes away from both Dover and the tunnel, I don't find the small difference in time taken to make paying extra for the tunnel worthwhile.
Plus, using the ferry gives you the opportunity to walk about, have a meal and generally set yourself up for a long drive when you get to France. Thinking about it, these attributes would be even more important if a long journey was necessary simply to get to the crossing.

As for not using the toll roads, if I have a specific destination, then I want to get there by the most efficient route. And that's normally France's excellent motorways. For instance, our house is near Cognac, and is 430 miles from Calais. The route we now take is Calais - Rouen - Lemans - Tours - Poitiers then off the motorway to Saleignes 40 miles away. Even with a stop for lunch, I expect to arrive before 18:00. That's not possible staying off the motorway and is well worth the 23Euros it cost last time.

as said its easier on the toll roads to cover the miles quicker and stay on the cruise control, if i remember its€ 23.50 from
st.omer to paris in a car.

In my trucking days I spent a couple of years driving all over Europe and I was lucky that the company I worked for were happy to pay the tolls.  Once I was heading back to Calais from Bordeaux and had plenty of time so I thought it would be fun to come off the motorway and take to the A roads... What a mistaka to maka!!  ::)  Shed loads of traffic, loads of hold ups tails backs etc and I got back on the motorway ASAP, set the cruise and put my feet up all the way to Calais!!!  ;D

For Calais to Luxembourg there are no tolls anyway. Leaving Calais, head to and go round Lille. Shortly after Lille is Belgian border

Yes, and that is an interesting route.  Done it many times, and I recommend stopping in Ypres.  Good cafe - restaurants, and a lovely Belgium chocolate making shop.  Also, if you love history, just spend some time at the Menin Gate Memorial and have a think or prayer, especially at 2000 every evening! :'( :'(

Opps. Sorry I am thinking of going via Dunkirk! :-[ :-[
