I have just went to use my car and the ignition has gone, the key turns but engine will not turn over when I remove the key the dash lights are still all on and the key spins freely no notch between positions. obviously I will need a new ignition barrel.
The car is a 98 3.0L MV6 if I get a new barrel and key off Ebay is the transponder in the lower part of the key? which will mean have to get new keys programmed, or do I need new barrel, key, transponder and ECU? any advice of the easiest fix will be appreciated.

Do you have the car pass? That will have the lock code, allowing you to get new barrel from a dealer.
You will also need it for code to program the key, I just bought new fob (minus blade) from a dealer for £31+vat (on trade) Apparently the eBay ones are crap in terms of build.

Actually scratch that, you can keep same key, just get new barrel, which will match current key. If you get it from dealer along with code :y
-
so nothing will need to be reprogrammed then?

Depends, if you have the car pass? Its a credit card sized thing with radio code, ect on it. If not can be around £30-50 to get it from dealer.
With that, it has a mechanical code for the key. So you can get a new barrel ordered, which will work with current keys.

Yes I have the car pass (it also has the audio codes on it) have you any idea of the price of a barrel from a dealer?

Sorry no :( - Someone else with TIS or TradeBook handy might be able to assist.
Worth joining Autobahnstormers though, to get trade prices. :y

To get you out trouble just get a another Barrel and Key, use the old Ignition Loop around the barrel and the old Transponder from the old key.
-
Is the key transponder in the blade part of the key? so if tie wrap it to the new barrel I use another barrel and key?

Could do that but just swop the Transponder from the old key, they just pull out (sometimes a little glue is used).
EDIT; just to check what year is the car.

Transponder is in the blade part, can separate that from fob & as long as its not been glued in will be swappable.
I'd wait until you know how much a dealer one is really, see which is most cost effective :)

How can the transponder be removed from the key? as advised will see how much the dealer wants first. thanks for the help

They normally just pull out from the Blade Plastic bit.

If you have the "horseshoe" type key, transponder chip here

Does the barrel actually provide the detents between switch positions? or is it the switch itself :-\
I would have the cowl off and have squint at the switch before condemning the lock barrel.
-
Only had a quick look, I take it you mean the switch on the end of the barrel, it doesn't click at each point anymore.

It's just the switch that provides the 'I', 'II', and 'START' positions.
No need to worry about immobilizer chips or new keys, just reattach/replace the black switch at the end of the ignition barrel...
-
Have removed the screw that holds the switch but can't get it to come off, I have removed the key/barrel. if I have to get a new barrel assembly it is held by the screws that the head break off, will I have to drill them out?

Do the pictures in these two guides help?
Ignition Switch and Connector Removal (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90601.0)
Ignition lock re-condition (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90600.0)
I don't know if the barrel has to be removed before the switch can be removed :-\
