Please, any suggestions in laymans english, not technical on computers. :-[

i have had that and found it was a virus, if you dont have a virus i would try a system restore to the time you last used word, do you know how to restore the system?? :) i diont know if vista has rstore, i presum it does.

Iv'e put the disk back in and am running the 'repair' bit at the moment, hope that is not the wrong thing to do.

You light weight. A 14 pounder does a better job.
If that fails put it in a sack and swing it round your head before you whack it against the wall.

Why would I want to destroy it, I just need to get it to open work, everything else works. :'( :'( :'(

Open a command prompt - type winword /a
This loads word in diagnostic mode.
If word loads ok most probable issue is a corrupt dot file - normal.dot.
Search for that file and when found delete all instances.
Then load word as you would normally - it will recreate a new normal.dot file.
EDIT
If that fails try opening a command prompt - type winword /r
This re-registers Word in the Windows registry. This switch starts Word, runs Office Setup, updates the Windows registry, and then closes.
Good luck

i've had "occasional" trouble getting word documents (new and existing) to open, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, i'm wondering if there's faulty software

Sorry to be thick, but where do I find it, had a look but can't.

Command prompt, this computer is different from my one a work.
Other easier way - click start, click run. Type winword /a in box, hit enter key.
Same for winword /r.
Hope that helps - sorry i'm used to command prompt but don't use vista as its crap (despite microsoft giving (yes giving) me a free 12 licence copy!!

What does he need fdisk for? Is he going to need to wipe all his installation and repartition? A bit drastic!!!
Agree XP Pro now good op system - especially now SP3 out.

Delete your normal.dot file - a reinstall will keep your original file intact. Then open word again.

Sorry its not - have used up a number of installs on multi-boot systems and once MS sort out the issues with SP releases may well need those licences!! Sorry but worth asking!

OK so you don't need to wipe the drive - I suppose that helps.
I'm staying SP2 for a while - it works. Too much DRM nonsence in Vista, they actually encrypt the data between components, it was designed to keep RIAA happy.
I think if MS drop XP pirating will go through the roof
