Interesting, is there a difference between traditional 4wd and awd? A friend was telling me about some sort of inferior 4wd system on his Audi TT; being bored to death by Audis I wasn't listening.

I think must be same.. all wheels must mean 4 wheels logically..

I disagree.... 4WD usually means MECHANICAL control, with a complicated drive train and a FIXED front/rear split.
AWD seems to be this crappy electronic control that varies the split whenever the ECU decides it should.. mate has a Volvo AWD thing .. supposedly 60/40 front rear "until required" when it puts power to any non-spinning wheel... sort of a very fancy traction control ... but it gets easily confused when on very slippy mud with a very large 'van on the back ... and each wheel spins in turn !!!! - sorted very quickly with a tow rope and an ancient "proper" 4WD --- an old landrover !

You can't beat a defender, they'll go just about anywhere if driven properly.

I bet a Subaru will be more comfortable the other 99% of the time though (having been in my other half's Dad's Defender 110!) ;D

Shame they will soon be replaced :(
Hopefully the new one will be as capable. And hopefully more comfortable!

I wouldn't want to jetwash the inside of a subaru though, whereas if it's a Defender, game on! It doesn't matter if you crash a Defender either (reallly it doesn't!), it all adds to it's character!

I would prefer a subaru anytime.. besides crashing a car converts it to a pile of junk soon..

Agreed - and if I wanted something to get up to it's axles in mud it'd be a Defender, for sure :) On the other hand if I wanted to spend any significant time on the roads .. I wouldn't ;)
Having said that, if Defenders could be picked up cheaply (er, I should add, roadworthy Defenders.. ;D) I'd be tempted, just for fun.

Cem, even the description of that video states:
"First and foremost, the Defender is by far the better off road choice."
Put that Subaru in 50cm of water and see if it's still running, for a start ;)

Not so sure on the EP90 leaking issues though.....

It's a good job there's no hills like that on my commute. ::)
Plenty of 4wd's though. Sigh...

Speaking of .. I saw a dark coloured Omega saloon this morning and thought for a moment that it was yours; until I got close enough to see it was a standard looking 2.6.
Must get my eyes tested :-X :-[
