Title: inlet manifold

i was changing the hbv valve and noticed that the inlet manifold was coated in oil any ideas

Oil leak mate - cam covers or oil cooler unions ;)

The oil cooler is located in the region, so you need to remove the plenium and check the connections to the oil cooler in the middle of the v, you have 2 large water connections on the coolant bridge and 2 oil connections to the cooler. clean with carb cleaner and recheck in a couple of days it should be quite obvious if it is the oil cooler.

 Also could be the cam cover gaskets have failed, if so replace with gen gaskets and 0 rings only, patterrn will fail again soon and clean the breather system while your at it.

well i know the rocker gasket has gone but didn't know it could cause that thanks thought

If the breathers have blocked then the pressure will blow the gaskets and spray oil all over the place, spray carb cleaner is the best to use to clean it up and replace cover seals.

And clean out breathers or it will happen again very quickly ;)
