Title: Traction control and engine fault light
Post by: Johnrobbo99 on 05 January 2013, 13:47:17
HI

My traction control light comes on and then the engine light (car with a spanner in it) comes on.
The gearbox then goes into a get you home mode - like winter mode.

Does anyone have any pointers for this one?

First post so thanks in advance

John

Fault code reader on order but from what I have been reading I suspect the wheel sensors

Will post when I have more info

Sounds like the ABS is unhappy, asking the engine to limp. Could be the other way around, so pedal trick is the easy first test.

Beyond that, it needs ABS read - are you anywhere near Serek?

Pedal test is free and you only need a foot  :)

Agreed but you can't reset codes, or read live data, with your foot  ;)

Probably ABS module is bad.
I had ABS light, check engine light on and speedometer didn't work.
I found out, that ECM reads speed through ABS module. TCM knows speed from ECM. So, if TCM "doesn't know" speed, gears don't switch properly.
I paid $72 for module from junk yard.
Bosch 5.3 module, I think.

The ECM, TCM and ABS all chat to each other on a CAN-based system bus, so they can all be classed as interlinked to each other's destiny :y

In this case, I don't think its the usual ABS ECU failure that affects post 1998 cars, as the symptoms don't quite match, hence wanting to get some diags on the car :)

Euro spec Omegas have various Bosch ABS ECUs, depending on age and engine. Not sure what options you have in the US, though suspect pre 1998 would be Bosch 5.1 and post 1998 would be Bosch 5.3. Those with TC would be the TC variants.

Everyone

Thanks for the posts.
Pedal test shows 1 - 7
Looking into that now.
Also speedo works but the indicator lights on the gear selector is also intermittent and seems to coincide with the fault occurring.

Many thanks

Ok schoolboy error.
Will do the test again and get 4 numbers.

The intermittent lights on the gear selector may be indicative of  the problem ??  I'd suggest a good clean of the selector as per the guide before doing anything else.

If the ECU's don't know which gear its in they are going to throw wobbly's all over the place ....  :(

It still changes gear smoothly when in fault condition.
When going into the fault condition it snatches the gear.

So the eml fault code is pointing towards getting a service.
I have noticed that the gear selectir does not always indicate the
Gear i am in but if i go through all the gears it seems to settle
Down ok.
Could this all be down to gear linkage adjustment or the selector
Sensor?

The 1700 means gearbox fault, which matches the LED problem.

Clean selecter switch :y

All
Thanks for the help.
Managed to get to the selected switch to clean it.
Did get some cleaning and it is getting better.
Can I squirt it with something like electrolube or wd40 or will this kill it?
Also failing this how much to change one out.

The fault code reader seems to work ok.
Got the same codes as the pedal test gave and cleared them.

I am also thinking of having the gearbox oil changed but not sure if it's worth it.

Any suggestions

Many thanks

John

fault still evident if hit and miss.
Have seen the posts on cleaning the switch so feel happier about that - can the cover be removed with the switch attachd or do I have ot take the switch off - The haynes manual says this is a big faf

Any help greatly received

John
