Does any one know wether the Autobahnstormers club is still in existence as I've just been on to their website to join and looking for recent activity it seems that there's nothing planned for 2013 at the moment, and before I part with £25.00 of my kid's inheritance I was wondering if anyone on here may know anything :-\
-
My guess is yes as I read about gatherings in the ABS's magazine the Straight Six. I asked the secretary for joining the forum in august no answer till now though so something went wrong... :-\
-
Still going and the forum is active but mostly Lotus Carlton stuff.
Well worth being a member IMHO .. a trip to the dealers and a flash of the membership card got me
20 ltrs of oil
5 ltrs Antifreeze
Set of brake pads (front)
Some clips
all for the grand total of £76.33
working out the cost without the card it comes to £206.77 !!!!
so my £25 card saved me £130.44 .. a profit of £105.44 on that visit alone .... If I don't go for a 12 month I'm still quids in .. and the chances of not needing any bits for 12 months is ........ slim ? :)

I think some of the positions have changed recently. I'm just about to renew my membership, and have relevant contact / payment details if required :y
-
As said, yes it's still running but the main website is updated periodically I believe, whereas the Forum is better for catching up with the Events Calendar as it's updated regularly.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Alan

Many thanks to all, that's put my mind at rest.I'll push on and get my application off to them :y
-
as said, its well worth it nitro. :y

:y :y

I ask for access to their forum 3 times when I was a member. Never did get it >:(, so let my membership lapse.
I was at the local ABS meet a few days ago, an it turns out, of all the attendees, only 1 was still a member :o

Which begs a question... is it worth renewing? My TC details have been logged on Vx's computer. I never have to show my card so doubt they'll want to see that it's been renewed as I just quote the number.
However I personally will renew as I like to be above board and I also like the straight 6 mag :y was just wondering what other peeps thought ;)
-
Ooer!! :o does'nt bode well then?

I renew for exactly the same reasons ... it would be a bit of a bummer to have ordered a shed load of bits then when you come to pay the "new guy" asks to see your card and its well out of date ..... as I said earlier .. the savings more than pay for the card .. trying to get an extra £25 by using an out of date card is just being stupid greedy.

completely agree :y

Never had a problem joining the forum personally but you don't have to if you don't want to. I don't post much on there as the Omega stuff is much quicker and more dedicated to Omega issues on here.
Being a paid up member supports ABS as a club and gets you a Trade Card, which lets face it, is why most of us joined. You can also view the Trade Club Book online.
The guys I've met have been a decent bunch of guys as well so it's a small price to pay really. :y
Those with their own legitimate TC card obviously don't need it. :)
-
I agree, its worth it for the TC and the mag. Moreso if you want to show your car at events.
I had a bit of a monk on with them after jumping through the hoops to join their forums 3 times. So I let it lapse, out of sheer bloody mindedness...
-
Which reminds me,my membership renewal is overdue. ::)
-
mine is taken every 1st july so i dont have to worry. never had a prob with Abs tbh. :y
-
Tbh,Im close enough to go and get my parts from Andyc,so not renewing is an option. The forum is pretty quiet and mostly LC based these days. :-\
-
Got a slightly mixed review on this one,but think it's worth a punt just for the benefits already mentioned, but moreover I'm looking to find somewhere with more meets, social events etc. But as I'm typing this and reading the incoming comments I'm thinking that if it's going to be all about LC's then second thoughts may be in order here ::) :-\

This is meant in the best possible way, but isn't part of this our fault for not posting Omega related issues. In fairness, most of us probably don't bother as we get an answer quicker on here and don't really feel comfortable butting in on the predominantly LC/Senator talk.
Also, OOF is like a 'live' forum. :y

Every DIYer on here should have one for the parts benefit alone.
imo of course :y
-
You may be right.Im not trying to knock them in any way ,its a good club, but the forum side of it doesnt really grab my interest. It may be at least partially that Im not that into spending that much time on forums these days. :-\
-
I guess on balance it's worth a punt for a year and let's take it from there :y
-
I joined for tc access, and for no other reason what so ever. It's worth 25 sobs for tc alone.
I later tried to join the forum, as i was bored, followed the on line prompts, not allowed to join as the tc username and password on my card was not mentioned in the sign up process at the time. So there for, not surprisingly, if it doesn't ask, it doesn't get. Member lost, no skin of my nose tbh.
IMO if a site can't sort it's sign up process correctly then its not worth the bother.
In fact it still doesn't ask you to enter the correct details, and implys using your own made up details.Stuff em.

No idea where, but it says in the sign up details that you use the user name they give you ie 1234 Chris Bloggs and a password that you then change as suits! I managed quite successfully to join, so it can't be difficult!
-
You haven't clicked the "agree terms" button P, have you.
And that would have been on the old site, yes?
-
Come on Mr technologist, where does it say to enter your tc card details? Hmm?

If memory serves me correctly, you have to request to join the forum and you are then notified of your user-name and password by the Admins as Andy said. It is not an instant thing but should be sorted within a day or two.
Anyone who doesn't hear back is obviously viewed as undesirable. ;) ;) ;D ;D
-
That's just the boilerplate forum signup message. With your membership pack you should have got a note that gave you your forum login details, IIRC. I just used the username and password supplied and it worked.
Would be good if they changed the forum message to reflect this, in fairness, since if your username doesn't match the one created for you, you've got a snowball's chance in hell of getting in.
Having said that, I think my subscription has lapsed. :-X

yes they do check hands on, but I only ever get a reply saying my details are not valid, as they don't include the "on the card" details, which they don't ask for in the sign up process a posted above.
This after waiting a week for them to check the application in the first place.
If I wasn't undesirable before, I certainly am to them now. ;D

Because if joining a forum is so easy, you'd be able to tell me how Mr P. ;)

If anyone has any grief joining, it's probably easier to e-mail them for clearer instructions, or one of us ABS members could raise the topic. It's probably not that big a deal though as we've got all of the info we need on here. :y
You might want to join their forum in future though as a few have got Monaro's or VXR8's now. :y

There are a couple of club officials you could perhaps email - secretary would probably be best, or the treasurer :-\

While they probably don't want to compete with another forum, they also need to realise this, if they want members to join the forum. Which they don't, or the sign up page would be clearer.
I do return periodically to see of they have changed the stated requirements, to the requirements they actually require, and sign up incorrectly just to annoy them. Then make my feelings clear in the reply to said email that asks for the correct details, instead of the ones they ask for.
It is terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tireding process, but if they annoy me, I reserve the right to annoy them back. Eejits.

Also may be worth asking for advice from KeithB who is a member here and runs the ABS club shop.
Ime they are quite a civilsed bunch.

Most certainly. Comes across as a very poorly run web site, from what I've seen so far. Their choice though, obviously.
I have no intention of jumping through any more hoops than their own sign up page. Any more than that.... Well. Lets just say, maybe it's not for me. ;)

lol Terry aka the chip man, was a member for years(approx4)and still is and was forever complaining he couldnt access the forum, I sat down at his computer and logged him in,took 5 seconds, reason?
for some strange reason its very case sensitive,
you need to
first put your member no space then first name with capital first letter space second name with capital letter then password
trick is knowing how to do it, example here
user name 524 Graham Cornell
then password as required
this si the only way you can get access otherwise it will not let you in!!

Yes Chris, that is my experience. :y
In fact now it has got to the stage that I am registered on the Vx system as a trade customer with all the extra discounts and they do not need to ever see my ABS card. Same applies at Halfords of all places! ::) ;D ;D ;D ;)
In fact I am highly tempted to now cancel my ABS membership and save £25 per year as I now have my trade status :D :D

Shame to see some people only joined ABS for the trade club savings.

+1
The TC card is an excellent benefit, granted, but I'm more than happy to pay my £25 a year to support an excellent, long standing club. They really are very friendly, civilised bunch. :y
-
Although I have said what I said in my post above, I am starting to feel guilty now!! :-[ :-[ :-[
I like the magazine as many stories and cars are very interesting, but personally fail to really "get into it all", as I think it is aimed mostly towards "the boys". It all seems too distant for me, unlike the warmth and a real feeling of a club that we find on the OOF.
However, yes I will retain my membership. As stated I do not need the card with Vx, but now would feel mean in not supporting the ABS. I suppose you never know I may need them. ::) ::)
Just wish the OOF had a membership card with a Vx Trade Number! I'd sooner pay £25 to the OOF!! 8) 8) 8) :y :y

Yeah, I correctly followed the instructions, including name in right format, and ABS number. 3 times over as many years. I really did want to join.
Admittedly, since then, I think ABS has got its act together better since then.

WoooOOOOOoooo ;D
It has often been posted by admin here, through communication between abs and OOF, that abs welcome the use of trade club, as it supports both sites. Using the forum makes no financial difference to anyone.
I would also point out, that I wrote the guide to tc access in FAQ, and link to it my sig below,(unless there's something more important like group buys, due to admin restrictions there isn't room for more than 3lines of text) also to help support both sets of members.
So knobs on to the pair of ya. Stroppy wazocks. :P ;D

The ABS forum is a bit of a ghost town at the moment, and as the Boy says you need active members which the ABS is short of at the mo.
I don`t ask about Omega problems on the ABS forum cos there`s not enough info on there, far better to ask on here but I do try and answer Carlton/Senator related questions if I can.
They`re a great bunch of guy`s on there but thats also true of OOF :y

Ive been a member on abs since i had a 24v carlton (mmm remembers :'() and have allways found everyone i have met at gatherings to be 1st rate. As on here.

ABS is still going strong but the events calender has not been put up for 2013 yet as its still to be decided what events are going to be attended. We are holding a commitee meet at the end of this month to finalise this. As for the web site, we have had a couple of differant web masters who have looked into sorting things out regularly but the said persons then dropped out. The chairmans wife has previewed at the AGM a new upgraded site ready for loading but the server now has problems it letting it be loaded. the company has gone quiet about sorting it out at the moment. We have a former commitee member who is now ready to step up to run the website once this has happened. The forum has been dead quiet for a couple of months or so now, is it the time of year or people not bothering to post? i dont know as it is very lively on here. It does not help me out in running the club shop. I sourced a lot of stuff members kept asking for and so far have not sold anything. It took a lot of time and bargaining to obtain the bits and offer them up for the prices to members that I have been able to. ABS makes a very small percentage on these parts to pass on as much discount to the members as possable. The service kits offered for the 2.5/3.0 V6 cars make the club about £1.50 per kit. not a lot but we pass on as much discount as possable.
look out in early Feb for 2013 events starting to be announced and the latest club mag by the end of this month (hopfully!)

The service kits offered for the 2.5/3.0 V6 cars make the club about £1.50 per kit. not a lot but we pass on as much discount as possable.
look out in early Feb for 2013 events starting to be announced and the latest club mag by the end of this month (hopfully!)

It could be quiet due to members like me not being able to log in no matter what user name I use! ::) ::) ::) ;)

Keith,
Might be worth raising this with the webmaster - it appears to be quite common.
I've had difficulty with it a number of times (have had to do the silly 'what is the capital of London' nonsense to no avail.
Both Geoff and Dave have sorted it for me without any difficulty.
What do you think?

a new upgraded site ready for loading but the server now has problems it letting it be loaded. the company has gone quiet about sorting it out at the moment.
As I've never got on to the forum, I don't know how busy it is. Nor do I know your setup. But if its a dedicated server, and you just need help setting it up, just shout. If its managed by your provider, you may be at their mercy. Maybe its a good time to shop around ;)
Again, just shout ;)

No idea on what software ABS use, but it should be fairly trivial to sort out with most forum software - asking for a name, and member number, and have moderator approval turned on. Most modern forum software has this ability... ...along with antispam to reduce the crap. It should be easy for members (IME, most people good with spanners are not so good with computers) and low burden for moderators.

I will put matters to them at the commitee meet. We only have a temporary web master at the moment, the chairmans wife. She keeps it updated as time allows in her schedule. Once the problem with the new format loading is sorted, we have a former commitee member who will then take over and keep it permanatly updated. He used to be the mag editor before Alex. i dont know anything about the servers etc. A server to me is a waiter at a resturant ;D.

Your "webmaster" (site content and day to day running) really needs to be somebody from your committee. If you need assistance in getting it set up so the webmaster can perform their role, I will help if I can.

Is it a long complicated process to join ?
I'm thinking about joining if there's a discount to be had, Is the card only good for VX dealers ?
Will be needing a full Cambelt kit this year.

joining is fairly straight forward. there should be a downloadable form or there was talk of doing it online. payment can be by paypal marked as a gift. if you have problems let me know and I will get some forms sent to you. As for thr forum, you have to register first once you are a member. You then get an e-mail confirming registration. Its the log in that seems to flumox most people. It is done by first putting in your membership number, leave one space, your first name, leave one space and then your second name, I.E; 1234 John Smith. If you dont use ant capitals in your name when registering, dont use then in log in. There is a box to tick for being remebered so you wont have to go through the procedure each time on visiting. I have a quick log in logo on the bottom bar on my PC so I can just one click that and go straight to the forum. hope this helps out.

I don't think all of them do, but certainly most of them. Isn't it Trade Card or Trade club???
Because I used the ABS TC card I get sent a Vauxhall one too. But I don't have to use them as as soon as I tell them the details they say - 'no probs, you're on the system'
Now that they've move to Chingford from Gants Hill, it'll be interesting to see if they've 'lost' the details.................. ::)

.........and yes, it is quite LC focused, but that's hardly surprising, surely?
And, as of the last AGM, all Omegas are now club cars, not just 2.5 TD and V6 models.
The ABS Forum is nothing like OOF; smaller number of regular participants and not as active. But, as OOF is primarily a forum on the internet, no surprises there.
My difficulties with log-in are always when I forget my log-in details; the 'forgotten password' link thing never works and I often have to do the 'what is the capital of London' nonsense without anything happening...
An email to administrator@Autobahnstormers.org.uk (or what ever the email is) always works
£25 more than worth it for TC alone :y :y :y
