Title: Fitting a F/L Front Bumper
Post by: Kate on 06 January 2013, 19:05:10
Hi all.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to change a front bumper? Will I need to take my mig to a garage?

I live in Fulham so doing work on cars in the street is a bit of a problem. Even parking near my house is a problem. ;D

Thanks very much. :y

The hardest part is getting the T25 torx screws out of the top of the bumper by the front wheels, they tend to corrode and then the fixing twists and breaks. Once they are out it's a doddle :y

Yes, I should think that working on one's own car would be a bit of a shocker round there!!!  :o  ;D

How much would a garage charge for this job?

A wild guess, about £100

DIY Kate, theres not much to it really.Just a few fixings, most of which are plastic and require no tools. The only really awkward bit can be getting the metal screws out if they are stuck, but your old bumper is scrap so you can be as brutal as you like without worrying about doing any damage. :y

I get some funny looks when I do anything on the car round here. The dogs in handbags brigade will be shocked! ;D ;D ;D

DON'T pay a garage to do it, they'll rip you off for what is about 20 minutes work!!!

The guide is really straightforward!  :y

Did mine recently and found the 2 tork had been replaced with normal self tappers, the most amazing bit was the two under the wing which I thought would be crap came out sweet as anything, took 20 minutes, so good luck

As soon as I get a torx screw driver I'm going to start.

Does anyone know where the outside temp sensor is located?

I need to change that too and I thought it was near the bumper somewhere?

When I did my PFL bumper recently, it would have been easier if I'd had either another pair of hands, or a box to rest it on when disconnected, thus allowing removal of the electrickery, foglamp connectors, temp bulb etc, without hanging the bumper on them. :y

My friend will give me a hand. We used to fix up old classic cars together.

I think you should do it at night Kate!  :)  You'll find it too easy in daylight, plus your neighbours won't see you!!  ;)  ;D

I think you're right. The traffic round here is a pain too. I live on a main road with no drive now so I'll have to be careful that I don't get run over! :o

Love the old cars, I had one of the old 36 BHP Beetles, torsion bar suspension, not the macpherson strut,  for 13 years, and an A30 for 1 year. Happy days. :y
