It was. Victorian London was not a pleasant place if you were one of the many piss poor. No social security, no health service.

Just die quietly in the rat infested gutter seemed to be the norm. :y

I'm recording it on series link as I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Glad it's getting good reviews  :y

The Victorian prose all seems a bit forced, the actors don't seem comfortable speaking 'in period', but it was a marked improvement on the first episode. I used to work opposite Leman St nick, albeit a few years after the suggested setting of this show haha! Used to see plenty of Omega cop cars parked up!

I have at last managed to watch the first episode, and will soon see the second.  Yes Opti it really reflects what we know the poor end of London, like Whitechapel, was like in the 1880s.  This atmospheric production oozes the dirt, squalor and dire poverty, with the smell of soot and rotting organic material almost coming out of the television! 8) 8) 8) :y

Remember this was at the peak of the British Empire, with Victoriana in it's full glory.  How many of the poor, and lower classes generally, ever really could enjoy that, all cramped 6 families or more confined to each room of a house, often "hot-bedding" it with each other?! ::) ::)

Who is still watching this excellent series?

For those who are and taking in the wonderful portrayal of policing in Victorian England during the 1880s, how many are wondering if only the police could work like that now with a no-nonsense approach before the days of PACE? ??? :D :D :D :D :D ;)

Cannot wait for tonight's episode, and wonder what uninhibited story line will befall us before the night is out?   :) :)

Well worth watching. However, I thought that the Austin Cambridge in the background was a bit of a continuity blooper. :)

I'd be happy with a Victorian no nonsense approach to policing, but to a point.  Torture is a bit out of order for example....  ;)

Yup, seen them all so far and really enjoying.

Filmed in Dublin of all places, and really good portrayal of Victorian London I think.

Which episode is the car in?

The square steering wheel didn't help, oh and the high set rear leaf springs that made the rear end 'float'! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Of course Opti! ::) ::) ::) ::)  The mind obviously wandered! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

The Allegro was certainly awful, just like the Marina; the bad days of the British motor industry, although the Fords then were great for the time! :D :D :D ;)

My first Allegro wasn't a bad motor, although I just couldn't live with the Quartic steering wheel and changed it! It had no leaks (unusual for the Marque I know ::))  I also had a Vanden Plas 1800 version some years later with real Connolly Leather seats & real wood dash! Went like sh*t off a stick but rusted away before my eyes :'(

Victorian England was also a time of great opportunity when people made and lost fortunes.

My great great great Granddad from a working class family made a fortune with a new technology at the time, indoor plumbing and flushing toilets in Sheffield. He had a nice big house and spent much of his money opening a pleasure gardens, in Sheffield, but that failed due him never being able to get an alcohol licence. My nan used to have some of the cups and crockery from a tea shop. When this failed he went downhill and by all accounts drunk himself to death!

I saw an article on this in the 1970's in a Sheffield newspaper my nan had been sent a copy of by her sister, who lived in Sheffield. One day when I get time I will have to look into my ancestry further. I know a distant cousin of my dad has done a family tree.
