Well this seems to be never ending. Does any have any experience of gaming through a 3g dongle like this http://store.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/Standard_Dongle?id=DGB32 ? thinking of plugging it into one of these http://www.netstoredirect.com/tp-link-routers/32778-tp-link-3g-3-75g-wireless-n-router-6935364051495.html?gclid=CNOatuXc2LQCFSbMtAodDE8A1g
The idea is to have broadband for a laptop and a xbox in rented accomodation, And be mobile with no contract tied to the flat. This is for my son and there is no phone line connected. It can be connected but cost is prohibitive for short term let.
Any advice gratefully received.

If he already has data as part of his mobile contract then why not simply use tethering via that?

Yep. My three contract is unlited data and tethering allowed. 3G signal can be temperamental though.

I'm thinking of changing my mobile to 3 because of the unlimited data. At present I use a 3 dongle on my laptop which is good, but the unlimited data allowance seems too good to be true...... :-\

What kind of games? RTT to the first hop on a 3G connection is several orders higher than that on DSL or Cable..

It will not be suitable for Xbox style online gaming.
I Mifi will be better than a tethered phone, normally, but still unsuitable.

dongle or tethered based internet is only good for browsing & general use.
No good for xbox games, although it may work his ping will be crap

Thanks for your input everyone. trying to get short term broadband at reasonable cost seems to be a complete mare. I wonder how students get on.

3g+ can be good to get you out of trouble or as a temporarily measure, biggest issues if its staying in the same place for 24 hours at a time is good signal and speed.
Worth doing your homework on best coverage, or trailing it first, considering most Networks give away payg Sims oline.
Ive tried some of those 3g Wireless Routers from Hong Kong without success, in my workshop which is in the middle of no where I use an old Sony Ericsson Satio by the window on constant charge with some MiFi software (Joikusoft) works really well, its left on 247, I can return after a few days and its still happily running.
On the speed side, Voice Paygo or Contract Sims will give you around 1.5 to 3.5 Mbs and proper Data Sims 3.5 to 7 Mbs Network depending, there is of course EE 4g but in my book its still early days for that one.
Nwtwork wise, on PAYG Sims, 3, T mobile and now Virgin give unlimited Data use for X amount per month with T Mobile being the cheapest at £5 a month or £20 per 6 months addons, shy away from the so called free 12 month iPhone Sims, they wont last the course if Data is hammered.
Broadband Sim wise best value is 3 or T Mobile (30 Day Contract), 3 gets expensive if you go over the FUP, where as T Mobile wont charge if over thee FUP but will restrict the downloading, normally Video formats iPlayers etc, but a quick Network reset normally gets around that.

I use an Orange dongle here at work out in the sticks and it reports that I get 3.6 meg although at times it seems much slower and certainly wouldn't support gaming,it will buffer you-tube ok though.

The costs of supplying fixed line broadband will mean either paying £90ish up front, or accepting a 12 month contract.
3G, if you can get a solid 3G signal, is fine for browsing/email etc. Just don't bother with the XBOX.

This is where I get confused. After reading aroundthe internet, half the people say it is ok for youtube etc. but no good for gaming. and the other half saying youtube etc. use more bandwidth than gaming.
Really confusing. But thanks all for the input :)

Gaming has specific demands, not met well by the erratic/bursty, high latency nature of 3g
