Title: Notebook RAM question
Post by: tigers_gonads on 08 January 2013, 19:55:15
My lad has a 12 month old HP Mini 210-3000 netbook with 1 gig of RAM.
The netbook has not got enough RAM for the programs he is running (mobile phone application software) to the point he is starting to get the blue warning screens.

We are looking to boost the ram upto 2 gig or more.

I've found this ......... middle one  :y
http://www.maplin.co.uk/hard-drives-and-memory/pc-laptop-memory/laptop-ddr2-memory

Is it just a case of powering the unit down, removing the old board and pluging in the new one ?
Does the bios need updating or anything like that ?
If there is a second slot for RAM, can I leave the 1 gig board in and still install the new 2 gig unit to make it upto 3 gig or do they need to be matching pairs ?

TIA

Depends on the laptop, look underneath, some have little logos for ram and point to screws. Check manual if you have it, if not download one.

Its straight forward (assuming its not one of the newer Macbooks)

I'd avoid Craplins & get memory here: http://www.crucial.com/ (http://www.crucial.com/)

I have a HP Mini 210 here. Popped in 2Gb and a 64Gb SSD to make it usable.

Another vote for crucial.

Solid state disk to replace the 160Gb (IIRC) hard disk.

You *must* use ESP with memory. Anyone who tells you otherwise is full of 'dangle berries'.

The lads netbook came with a 250 gig hard drive iirc.
Am I right in thinking that a SSD has no moving parts so more stable ?

Flash based so solid state and faster access times

Faster, less power, more robust. A 250Gb SSD withh be £200, so too expensive for what is a slow PC

It was 2500 quid  :y :y
Not bad for a 16 year old who spends most of his time sat on his arse playing with his phone  ::)

If he has a need for a netbook, all well and good. But a laptop is a more capable device

Agree with you there  :y

Tbh, the netbook was a christmas box of me and the missus 12 months back when we was really on the bones of our arses  :(
I'm pretty sure he knows that but I don't think he wants to replace it just yet because he thinks it would upset us so thats why he is looking to upgrade it a little and get some use out of it :)

Right, had a word with the lad and decided to stick 2 gig of ram in it and see how it goes.
Thanks for the youtube pointer and advice lads  :)
