No 1 daughter has just told me that the rear screen wash just hits the floor directly without touching the screen! She's only had the car about 7 months & has just got around to telling me! ??? ??? ???
It took less than 30 secs to adjust the ball type jet! But testing the washers meant that it emptied the bottle ....... Dad to the rescue again! ;D ;D ;D

Similar here Andy. A few weeks ago my daughter told me that her windscreen washers had packed up. Embarrassed look on her face when I asked if it had simply run out of screen wash. ::) ::) ;D ;D

Always explain, and train your daughters how to undertake basic car maintenance from the earliest of ages so they do not get ripped off by anyone, and also of course do not pass jobs onto you. Apart from that early training, send them to night school for car maintenance so they are encouraged to tackle bigger jobs and know what to do, whilst recognising woman can undertake such work as much as men! :y :y
If you don't then the ladies around you will rely on you. So many men want to be in the position of being "the man" and a jack of all trades, whilst thinking ;) the "little" women in doors is not capable of such work! Rubbish! But that is what so many men do, and you wonder why women let you get on with it!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Both swmbo and eldest daughter (others dont have cars - yet :( ) have been shown by me many many times how to do all the basics, tyres, oil, coolant and washer. They still come and ask me to do it as it is "mans work" - VERY frustrating, especially tyres. Put money in machine, set to 30, put on to tyre valve, beep beep, done grrrrrrrrrr >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
There is I believe a defo pink/blue deviding line 95% of the time. She drives / he maintains and takes to be fixed or fixes :'( :'( :'(

well said!! My dad brought me up to work on my own cars (my first was a 1978 Mini that needed summat doing every weekend), and he'd have me doing jobs like stripping and rebuilding the carburettor, tackling the brakes, routine servicing, bodywork, etc.
Ok, so modern cars are a little bit more involved, and since having a nasty car accident a few years ago my arms and shoulders are weak so I'm not up to swinging on breaker bars and sockets like I used to be, but when I first had my DeLorean resto project 10yrs ago, I thought nothing of getting stuck into the engine rebuild, as well as lots of other jobs, and thoroughly enjoyed myself :)

Nobody bought me up to work on anything :'(

Obviously there are those that do and those that don't. :y Some women are cut out for it and enjoy working on cars but my wife and daughter are not in that category. They are in the category where they try to beat their own personal best of how many handbags they bought the previous year. ::)
I don't deny that some women can do the jobs, but they are surely in a minority. :-\
Must add, I know the female members on here do just get stuck in, so fair play to them. :y

My granddaughter keeps on about when she's bigger she wants a 32 ford hotrod- Honestly dont know where she gets it from ;D ;D :y

Oooohhhhh that sounds so wrong in many ways ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Seriously mate I think it stemmed from taking her with me to work on the cars for summer shows-used to put her in a bouncer chair-she was in diapers then-so could say she's been around classics and customs before she could walk :y :y

Its role reversal in my house
i maintain and fix he drives i must admit hubby does pull his finger out if kicked. :y
i have been working on cars for years and been an enginneer since i was 17. never wanted to do anything else think it might have something to do with me conning my old man when i was 13 to by my a shell of a landrover and i took it to peices every nut and bolt and then rebuilt it much to my mothers dis like the drive way was covered in landrover parts ;D ;D ;D The more difficult bits my dad helped or did for me if i addmitted defeet.
i dont understand why ladies cant do the simple things i would cringe if i had to ask a bloke to check levels or change a tyre! if you cant do the basics then you shouldnt be allowed to drive!!!! imho!!! and levels are basics OPen bonnet and look most cars these days have yellow caps to high light them for you.
sorry mini vent over. i do try and educate my female mates and were getting there i have gone from doing it all to supervising them which is a start :y

If I ever finish the first kit car then a Factory Five '33 Hot Rod is at the top of my list (w/ 390 FE & dual quads, no hood, no overriders and no roof in flat black with red interior..) :y - https://www.factoryfive.com/kits/33-hot-rod/
Or maybe a '32 in brown just like this (slightly NWS, underwear visible): http://www.myrideisme.com/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/hot_rod_1932_032.jpg ;D

lol !!
as for women collecting handbags *shakes head in disgust at my fellow female of the species* ....
my idea of retail therapy is a day down at Looms' Scrapyard in Derby :y However now I have a toddler in tow, 'elf n safety means I cant go any more, but back in the days of common sense, I used to love accompanying my dad to a local scrappie (which is now underneath a posh new housing estate).
I'm planning on bringing my daughter up the same way, she's already got her own car (a 1993 Toyota Sera that used to belong to her older sister), and she will be expected to look after it - my daughter will not refer to oil as 710 fluid......

Well yes, I started to become interested in car mechanics (and the boyfriend involved in them!!) at 12. 8 is a great starting age Symes! :y :y :y :y
All for it, and eventually women will make up at least 40% of all technical trades :D :D :D 8) ;)

I agree Marie! :y :y
It will take some time to get all us ladies in the frame of mind to tackle all jobs possible, but there is still a problem / challenge with how us girls are raised.
My father was utterly useless with DIY in any form, but my mother, and grandmother before her, believed in tackling anything and so did all the basic house maintenance. There were no cars in the household, so my mum never progressed to that, but she would have done if the opportunity had arisen! But in so many households in the past, and I suspect still in some, girls are over encouraged to let men get on with their manly tasks, with women doing their's. So old fashioned, and bit by bit things will change. My daughter was encouraged by me to do everything she could with looking after a car and house maintenance. I am sure her daughter, my grandchild is now being brought up as a girl of the 21st century with all jobs open to her in the new female self reliant world! :D :D :D No wonder men are becoming rather paranoid about girls being top mechanics (like you Marie :y :y) and high level technical staff building nuclear submarines or airliners! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
The revolution is in hand, but just a bit held up by a lack of confidence and over bearing men! ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;)

Well done Claire, I had many a happy day like that, although I must admit I am also a shopaholic buying all the shoes, handbags, and clothes I can afford (and more!!) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Us girls can now do both, and extremely well! ;D ;D ;D :y :y

I don't get involved in these arguments... :)
My one and only comment to wife years back was.... 'Did you check the oil'.....and the reply was.... 'And when did you last iron a shirt'
I admit defeat, and do not enter that area again. :y

I can imagine that is a bit scary, but I greatly admire you Marie for what you have obviously achieved in what would have been more of a "man's world" in past days. :y :y :y :y :y
You are of course committed to your job and try to maintain a high standard, that is clear to see. That is what I have experienced in business with female colleagues at managerial level. They have always cared about how they achieve their objectives, and have been far more committed than many of their male counterparts who have had a different attitude towards their job. In a way the women have been less confident (I know I was even when at a very senior level) then the men, so have put more effort in to make sure things are "perfect". The men were always more laid back, being totally confident (even arrogant!) and more prone to be lackadaisical in their results.
Oh yes, I can feel men ganging up on me now, but I can only state what I have known! ;D ;D ;D ;)

I'm loving this 'discussion' ;D
I'm reminded of the time, 20+ yrs ago, when I had a Saturday job at a local tyre centre - I'd gone in to get some new boots on the aforementioned, Mini, and asked to borrow a screwdriver and spanner as my front number plate was loose again.
The manager could see that I was ok with tools, and asked if I wanted a job, £20 for a full Saturday, cash in hand, plus I got to keep any tips. Now back then, beer was about £1 a pint, so £20 was good money to me lol
I remember some old boy came in with his Metro, and I drove it into the bay, and started removing the back wheel to change his tyre - at which point, said gentleman, who was probably in his 70's, said "excuse me, are you a girl?" to which I said I was the last time I looked, and he said "well you should be at home in the kitchen helping your mother, not doing a man's job!"
So I put the air gun down, and went and got one of the lads to do his car, and I moved onto to my next job, a Citroen 2CV - owned by a typical 2CV owner (hippyesque type), who said "oh wow, a girl tyre fitter!! right on!!"
Yep, it really was one of those days ! lol ;D
