Title: can I repair the multi=function light stalk on my omega b 2.5td?
Post by: iansdad on 16 January 2013, 22:21:07
The multi function light stalk on my omega has developed a fault. :'( It has started to switch on main beam on its own without any involvement from me. I have the same problem with the other halfs Astra. I have changed the Astra stalk about 3 times with ones from the local scrappers but they all seem to have the same fault. Is it possible to strip down the switch and repair it?WFWE

A common failure mode. About £50 from dealer, trade. (not massively more retail)

TD uses a different stalk to non TD Omegas

It wouldn`t hurt to strip it down and have a look, I`ve done it on a Carlton before and got it working ok and I`ve done brake light switches too. Be careful when you open it up though cos there are some small springs and you need to see where they go on the re-build, lose them and you`re goosed  ;)

Yes, they can be fixed - however:

As said, they are a pain to strip, and those little springs are very difficult to work out the positions of before they go into orbit. Once found on the floor, you will struggle to get them back into the right places. Once that bit has been worked out, you will notice that the fault is down to pitting / arcing and general degrading of the switch terminal surfaces. Yes, you can clean them, and you will probably use some form of abrasive here as they only way to do it. This will destroy the terminal surface even more, and if, and only if, you manage to reassemble it, you will find that the degraded switch surfaces will probably go very intermittant very quickly.

Thats why it really is a false economy to do it -

Buy a new one  :y
