No reason to disbelieve the story.

Bring back maps and more importantly the ability to read them and a modicum of common sense!
Incidentally, on car rallies does the driver now have a sack of potatoes and a sat nav or does the navigator (there is a term from the past) still peer through his Poti at own folded flat Ordance survey map shouting (no headsets) flat left, 400 hairpin right, 200 90 left........

No need to ban GPS or anything like that, one thing and one thing alone would have prevented this - as you said, common sense.
I can't even imagine how you can drive for even 1/48th that time and not realise something has gone wrong without being some kind of simpleton.

probs typed it wrong into the nav... one letter wrong at the start and that could put you in bother ha. I remember my sat nav telling me to turn left once which was a slip way to the sea.....i remember becuase i didnt have an amphibious vehicle at the time and thought hmmm. i dont think ill bother.

Can you imagine anyone of reasonable intelligence, with a rough idea of how long the journey to the railway station would take travelling for 900 miles over numerous hours? Come on, pull the other leg!!! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Us women are well know to do something that men rarely do when feeling lost; we ASK someone for directions!!! :D :D :D :D :D
This is either one of those "stories" created to entertain people with it's stupidity, or this women suffers from severe dementia and should not be driving anyway! :o :o :o :o

It is a woman were talking about here Lizzie :P :P They are brilliant with white goods, small domestic appliances and doing two domestic jobs at once but put a steering wheel in front of them and they are useless ;D ;D ;D

IIRC when the M25 was first opened as an orbital motorway a driver (I really can't remember if it was a man or woman) drove around it for days!! ::) ;D ;D

There was a case years ago when an old fella and his wife set off for somewhere in the far north, and were stopped by police somewhere near their starting point, Kent I think it was. They got so far up north but turned off the A1 I think it was, by mistake, and headed south again ;D ;D

My not too bright neighbour, can't read a map or navigate, once went on holiday from Sandhurst to Yeovil via Birmingham as you do. ::) :o :o :o :o :o :o
I'm fortunate, my Dad used to do time trialing and rallying, so I learnt to read a map, know our exact position and to do a feature running commentary, from a very young age. My Dad could not stand sitting in traffic, so would always take the first exit off a road, where there was one and I had to have an alternative route ready.
The only time I use the Sat Nav in the Omega is when I want to find a particular destination in a city. Most of the time, my own route will be shorter, quicker than the one the Sat Nav deems best and then all you get is "Nagging Netty" saying "at the next roundabout do a U turn" etc, etc.

My Aunt in law lives last house down a no through road at the end of a village. The road is clearly marked no through road but is shown on Prat Nav as OK. People get stuck having driven on the grass (it isn't even surfaced after her house) and sliding down the bank. About one a month has to be recovered by truck. She has even put a sign up herself but it still keeps happening about once a week.

I just love my SatNav, I drive a lot and use it all the time . . .

I recall a taxi driver in Crawley, who, when asked to take someone to Heathrow did the following...
Went North up the M23 and turned right onto the M25. Passenger asks what he's doing, but driver insists that he's going the right way. Eventually he concedes that he is a complete bellend, and turns round....
...at the M1 ;D
Suffice to say the passenger missed their flight, cost the firm and ultimately the driver, the cost of a first class ticket on the next flight and the drivers job ::)

Not sure about the authenticity of this story.
But it does remind me of a guy I worked with many years ago.
Lived in Cheltenham, and he wanted to travel to somewhere just north of London on M1.
He told the story that they stopped at a services on the M25, and later on stopped again. His, then 9 year old son, asked "haven't we been here before?. Yep, they were back at the same services after going all the way around the M25.
I did let him know he was a prat on 2 accounts. The first one he knew. The second one, of course, is admitting it.

The firm I worked for used to deliver to Marks and Sparks, who were red hot on delivery times, all our trucks went out at a scheduled time to allow them to get to store for 6.00 am,...a driver left the depot at 5.30 for a 6.00 am delivery... at 6.10am an irate M & S storeman rings in to find out where his delivery is..they rang again at 6.30 / 7.00 ./7.30, we sent someone out along the route to look for him, no sign...
We were based at Rugby which was only half an hour away from the store (Stratford on Avon)..at about 10.00am the driver (a new agency driver) rings in saying he cant find the store...where are you asks the Traffic Manger...Stratford of course, where abouts in Stratford...by the river,right by the side of The River Thames. London....
No one said Stratford ON AVON..and he never queried his 30 minutes driving time, its all down to using "The little grey cells"

Similar thing happened a while back, woman took a taxi to Chelsea football ground, ended up in Lincolnshire

I'm not saying too much cuz it is easily done.....I went round that road that goes round Paris twice ??? What is it...the preriferique or something like that.
The Eiffel Tower kept appearing on different sides of the car.....then took the wrong turning and ended up doing a trip round Orly Airport. :(

You aint my bruvver or sumat are you, I did exactly the same thing and ended up driving thro the taxi rank in Orly...the wrong way...with a caravan on the back...talk about nightmare.
Kids kept saying theres the Eiffel Tower, at the back, out the side..out the front..I hate the Eiffel Tower.. :)

My wife is French, originally from Viry-Chatillon which is just south of Orly airport. I have driven there many times over the years in all weather conditions using the Boulevard Peripherique and it can be a bit intimidating at times as the French drivers do not always tolerate English cars. In fact we were stuck in a huge jam there once driving my old Sierra estate and after about 4 hours my left knee seized up due to excessive use of the clutch. I had to get out and let her take over driving to much sounding of horns and it was then that I decided to buy an automatic car, soon after I bought my first Omega estate and have never looked back.
