News is coming in that the Algerian army stormed the oil refinery, without the knowledge of either the British or American Governments.
Cameron is warning of very sad and distressing news to come, with the repatriation of bodies! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

It hasn't gone wrong as far as the Algerians are concerned. This is how they do things and, if you go to work in a foreign land, you have to accept the consequences.
The kidnappers/terrorrists will not leave that place alive/free, and this will send a message to anyone else who wants to try it.

We know Steve.
But they should have requested either the SEALS or the SAS to do the job as other nationals were involved. We do not know yet exactly what happened, but it does sound as though the Algerian army went in with all guns blazing. As you say, that is what they do! But, a lot of governments are going to be unhappy explaining the death toll. :'( :'(

I disagree, it gives the US/UK governments an easy get-out from an impossible situation. All they have to do is look upset, and it will all go away.

It happened on Algerian territory, and involved "internationals" who had freely chosen to work in what they were aware was a dangerous country.
Why should we risk *our* servicemen, or even *pay* our servicemen, to sort out another country's problems - <mode="sarcastic">unless there's an oil contract in it for us

This links in with my Mali thread.
Err here we go.
Cameron postpones his important speech on Europe as he is chairing yet more Cobra meetings. Africa, the new Afghanistan?
This could yet be our way out of austerity. :o :o

Our way out, Pedro? ;D

Yes our way out. Until you leave a country you often don't realise just how patriotic you are.
Don't forget I spent many years paying UK tax through the nose for the "good of the country" only to see it squandered or wasted on the EU project.
I have seen here first hand how EU money is spent like it is going out of fashion. The cost? Merely to erect a sign saying built with EU money. e.g. 157,000 eurs spent on resurfacing the dirt track past our house to the main road.
I still have a vested interest in the UK and would like to see it do well and not drift into mediocrity as it is now. Sadly I can neither vote for a UK MP or a Spanish MP due to the stupid laws. Only MEPs or our local leader.

Reuters are reporting that 30 hostages have been killed, 7 of which were foreigners! :(
I suspect that a lot of dust needs to settle before the truth comes out..... :-\

Yes, especially as we have just heard at 1100 the hostage crisis "is not over", with fighting still continuing with "multiple casualties" :'( :'(
Not good :o :o
