Title: Why do Dyson vacs clog so easily?
Post by: Martin_1962 on 03 May 2008, 21:53:20
So far I have blasted the cyclone out 4 times in a year, if I didn't have the compressor (my wife doesn't realise I have despite knowing I use it for tyres, cleaning the Dyson, the computer, squirting waxoyl up body panels (my Omega won't rust), and cleaning breathers.), it would need a new cyclone.

Now the design does work but gets in a state ever so easily, I have heard that a lot get scrapped due to clogged cyclones.

Cyclones rely on air flow to operate effectively, get a bit of crud in the way and the air flow gets disturbed, the work far less efficiently and they clog.

Be thankful its not the bloody motor which is the normal thing that throws the towel in on dysons.....either that or they fall apart.

The air passages are also riddled with sharp edges to maximise the likelihood of blockages. Not exactly a clever design despite what his marketeers say. >:(

I`ve just got the basic Dc04; which I use (and empty) every day, `really great picking up dog-hair....but `on it`s third brush-bar, second motor, second entire-handle and zillionth drive belt.....and the cyclonic action isn`t effective with fine grits, because that blue post-filter 'thingy' needs a washout every month on mine....and combined with the overly tall handle and it (seemingly) being made of the thermoplastic equivalent of bone-china....it does work well; but not the 'ultimate' machine it is said to represent.
A triumph of design-values over longevity  ;D

*I found that my garden leaf-blower is great for blowing dust out of the cyclone chamber.  :y

Yes. Makes it as total waste of time if you're doing lots of DIY as it clogs in seconds. I have a cheapo Dirt Devil for that job. The Dyson works acceptably if you only ever hoover dust from your carpets - until it clogs somewhere, has an electrical failure or the belt breaks, which happens sooner than you can get to the switch if something jams the brush. >:(

we've got an upright , had it for several years .I absolutley despised the 'kin thing and condemned it as less than useless and refused to use it. Wifey got Dyson engineer in to service it last month .He replaced everything that was faulty, broken or missing.this included ,clutch collectorcase, brush drum ,various mouldings and power flex  :oTurned out that a cone in the collector was missing from delivery and the thing couldn't suck for it's life. ;D ;D ;D
90 euro ( £78 ) a years guarantee and for once it works. :y
Hope their quality control is better now........

Yup our Dyson has just done that, looking for a new upright cleaner, any recommendations from the masses out there.. Would prefer an upright, bag less with retractable cable.

I don't know how Dyson ever got away with their advertising spin regarding "no bag so no loss of suction" ::) bullsh1t! as soon as the filters clog the Dyson" sucks" or in reality doesn't >:(

Yep. The other thing they don't mention is that a cyclone takes a lot of energy out of the air. Probably more than a bag.
