Oh god, something else wrong with me bloody car now :'(
after all the great work Symes did for me
i am going to have a go at cleaning the "breathers" as Syme suggested
but wondered if anyone else has had the same problem and knows what it is
i am getting a "pinking" in 4th and 5th gear now, at about 1000 - 1200 revs when pulling away after coming to a roundabout
my miggy has never done this before, i have been using Sainsburys Fuel recently, just because its cheaper
have now just filled up with BP Ultimate, maybe that will cure the pinking?
i have had new spark plugs put on last weekend, i didnt replace the HT leads, or could it be coil pack? crank sensor?
i am getting no EML light flashing up when its pinking, should i do a paperclip test?
thoughts?

:y and don't panic ;)
-
Paperclip test done
no fault codes, only the usual 31 and 12 :-[
-
saying that, i had a coil dis pack fitted in February 2012, so surely cant be that giving the pinking :o
-
Did you sort the knock sensor issue http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=96711.0
-
Yes Rob, knock sensor all sorted out, completely sorted the problem when it was done, had new one fitted

My thoughts? Change gear!
The V6 is very smooth & hides the fact that it is labouring at 1000rpm (unlike a diseasal engine which is designed to slog along at low revs).
I don't know how many miles your engine has done or how much oil it uses but it probably has carbon deposits in the cylinders that will promote pinking. Also a high mileage engine will not have much oil pressure at 1000 rpm so it will do it no good at all labouring & pinking at low revs.
-
have ya thought about crank sensor for ign advance as that is a common cause of pinking if the before tdc fire isnt advanced enough it will pink ,,,
-
Crank Sensor been done 3 years ago, my car has never pinked at 1000 revs, suddenly it is now
its done 99802 miles, regular oil changes, serviced regularly, doesnt use a lot of oil
-
pulling away from roundaboouts in 4th or 5th will make it pink or even stall, unless your exiting it at 60mph. :o
-
Just because it was changed 3 years ago does not mean it wont now.
PARTS FAIL. Often when you just dont need it to. ::)

Never does any harm to check that the breathers are clean :y
What make & grade of plugs?

£63 FOR PLUGS, well theres one born every minute, what was wrong with gen vx plugs apart from they dont cost £63. :o
-
already said on previous thread, no time due to working all the hours god sends
havent got time to go to Vauxhall
-
As the saying goes, a fool and his money are soon parted.... come on mate... you dont have time to go into a vx dealer and buy 6 plugs for christs sake.
Time AND time again the advice given on here to members is stick with the gen parts but still people ignor to there cost, AND cost in this case is a poor performing engine, since you fitted these plugs. ::) Put the original plugs back in and see if the pinking dissapears. ::)
-
I'd want them made out of gold, that's more than £10 a plug! You can get genuine GM ones either mail order on Ebay or even via AndyC, so there's no excuse for not buying genuine :P :P
On a serious note mate - if this issue has started since the introduction of these plugs, and was fine before, then it's quite a co-incidence if it's not related. I've heard good things about Denso plugs, in fairness to them, and they SHOULD be absolutely fine - BUT they are still an unknown quantity in this equation. I would say you need to try it with genuine GM plugs and take it from there. They just might, have some sort of incompatibility.
I think I speak for everyone who has contributed to this thread so far, in saying the advice given is to put genuine GM plugs back in there and road test.
At the end of the day GM plugs are a couple of quid each, so even if it turns out you didn't need them, you'll have them in the glovebox/boot when the next service is due. Or handy spares.
What you describe as a "pinking" I think you're actually trying to explain the symptoms of a HT misfire - which, by very nature, will be much more apparant under engine load - and not log any fault codes in the ECU, as it's a non DBW engine. Therefore it would also be very wise to individually check each HT lead, ensure they they are not split/cracked/damaged, are fully home, so on so forth. Pay specific attention to the shaft of each lead that goes into the plug hole.
Also, without wanting to sound like I'm teaching anyone to suck eggs, were the plugs properly tightened? If not they can work loose very quickly...
-
were the plugs properly tightened?
And that means a torque wrench used....

Told Waynester he need breathers looking at and could do with some new leads this was when Plugs were done :y :y

So leads are probably a culprit - the act of removing to change plugs may have been final straw.

yes mate but you try getting some at 3.30 on a sunday afternoon :y
will give him a call as his band not got concert next weekend :y
-
going to see Symes on Sunday in Cowley (Oxford) fitting new HT leads, fuel filter, doing the breathers, changin air filter while i`m there
what does VX charge for HT leads, fuel filter and an air filter for the lot?
thanks :y
-
I'd recommend air filter defo from GM (pattern are sub standard). Fuel filter, GM on cost if you have tradeclub. Try AndyC if you don't/
HT leads, GM are ridiculously expensive, so pattern.
-
already got a set of Bosch silicone HT leads anyway, will use genuine VX fuel filter, already have K&N Air filter in my car, it may still be okay anyway
has given me ZERO probs
-
Is it the K&N type that is supposed to be oiled regularly?
Either way, when you replace, the GM one is the best.

Okay mate, i have a Pipercross air filter that i bought last year, haven't fitted it yet
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120957108962

what do they cost?

Whats the year got to do with it mate - your many claims on OOF only mention mileage!! ::) ::)

And torque re-checking after they have bedded in. :y

Air filters treated with oil are known to kill the air flow meter (MAF). If the air flow reading is wrong the air/fuel ratio will be wrong. (which can cause pinking). Not sure how you can check the MAF without access to Tech2 to get 'live' readings.
Fitting a known good one may not prove anything because the fuel trims will have been skewed by incorrect readings from the old one (so Tech2 still needed to zero the long term trims).
-
I didn't think anyone used those 'oil as you go' air filters anymore because they play havoc with the MAF etc?
Surely a clean paper element filter is the way forward?
edit: typing slowly wins no prizes! ;D
-
The Omega's air filter is so huge there's no point using anything but a standard filter.
