I notice that under new legislation regional health authorities are being given powers to determine whether to introduce fluoride to the local water supply. In amendments to the Water Bill, the responsibility shifts from the local water companies, most of which have been reticent to add fluoride.
Is fluoride safe?

I dont ever recall any scare's about it being unsafe like MMR BSE etc but looked up and found this on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation) and this on flouride controversy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation_controversy)
It does make you wonder why it is'nt more common place in the UK though

They have been trying to introduce it in Southampton for a number of years and the main reason is said to be the poor condition of children's teeth in Southampton. That is fair enough, but I don't see many kids these days drinking tap water. So many conspiracies have surfaced around here as to why they want to do it.
The worst bit is the water people cannot actually tell where the fluoride will end up, as there maps of the system are incomplete :o.
I could go on about it for ages.

I thought that they had been adding flouride to water for years even decades. I have just checked and it isn't done in our area, it occurs naturally to a certain degree anyway but you can get an Household filter to remove it, expensive though.

Flouride has been in the water in many parts of the country for a very long time now, many many years.
The only difference here is that it is the health authorities instead of the water company that is making decisions. I don't see that much will change. I do know that in some places you can actually taste or smell it, others you can't. If there were any health risks, they would probably have been uncovered and discretely hushed up by now :-X

I have had one of these Water filter (http://www.screwfix.com/p/high-capacity-water-filter-kit-10/16747) installed on my kitchen tap for over 10 years - £21 with plumbing bits about £30 - replacement filter £10 changed bi-annually. Have seen some kit's at £140 that is a bit much
When fitting kitchens I suggest these to my customers works very well.

I have come across this issue in the past - reasons captured in link above to a certain extent. We are busy looking at fluoride technologies in EU and in US they are busy trying to ban them.

When fitting kitchens I suggest these to my customers works very well.
That's not too bad :y, I was refering to a system for the incoming supply to the whole house about £400. Thinking about it tho' you only really use drinking water from the kitchen anyway. :y
Don't some fridges have then in for iced water ???
I seem to recall that many years ago over flouridisation caused white spots on childrens front teeth as they were growing. I think it was a combination of water flouride treatment and flouride toothpaste called Flourosis I believe.

I must admit that I am not concerned one way or another.
I am quite prepared to allow those qualified to make the judgements as over 50 years I have never known a scare over this, just political debate that seems to go nowhere.
Frankly there are many other things to worry about than this subject. ;)

Flouride has been added to our water for Decades now, ever since all the old Iron & Lead supply pipes were ripped out and replaced in the 60's. It's supposed to be beneficial but it has totally altered the taste and refreshing nature of the water :(
