I noticed that when i had started the car this morning the traction controll and ABS light was on and when i drove off the speedo wasn't working. When i had stopped for a while and tried to start again the engine would not turn over. I left it for a while came back and tried again it was fine. though the two lights were on again. I have the battery on charge at the moment even though it registers on the charger as charged. Any one got any ideas..
-
Most likely (99%) abs ecu furbared mate - if you're extremely lucky could be a "wheel" sensor.
-
What age is the car?
-
Its a 2000 omega elite 3lt V6. I have jst been reading the hand book and it do's mention that when the battery go's flat. The ABS & TC lights will stay on. I did charge the batt last night and refitted it. havn't tried it yet. will come back on when done.
-
Yep after charging the battery last night i started the car this morning and all was OK :y. One to watch out for i'd say in the current conditions.
Demisters, heated seats etc must take their toll.
Tanks for your suggestions.
-
Interesting.
Time for a new battery though I think. :-\

ABS module is bad, go to junk yard to get another one. Bosch 5.3 module. Maybe, problem is intermittent.

I have the same problem, I noticed today coming back from canterbury to Hastings, the TC and ABS lights came on together for a few seconds, it did it probably 4 or 5 times and I think they came on just after I applied the brakes, I had a new battery about 6 months ago, but todays journey of about 50 miles each way is a rare longish journey for me, almost 100% of my Omega use is very short journeys of a couple of miles perhaps a few times a day, with blowers going and lights so the battery gets a lot of use.
I saw wheel sensor mentioned, a couple of weeks ago I replaced the rear brake pads for the MOT, the metal clips more or less disintergrated when i removed them and couldnt be refitted, could this be connected ? I also replaced a front tie rod and an advisory was front brake pads are low but I havnt changed them yet, just thought I would include this info
Just want to add that my old battery didnt make the TC and ABS lights come on so am I looking at a fubared ABS ECU ?
-
After re-reading Footlooses post again i havent experienced any of the other problems, the car drives normally when the lights come on and the speedo works.

Whereabouts can I find the wheel sensor guys and what exactly does it do, because I havent had any of the other problems Footloose has had apart from the lights coming do you think my ABS ECU is ok ? sorry for hi-jacking the thread.
-
At the rear there is one each side of the diff with a wire going to it.Also one similar on each front hub.I had a rear one play up a year or so ago which gave similar symptoms to ABS ECU failure.Only way to tell for certain is either to have the info read by an appropriate code reader such as tech 2 or replace parts. They send wheel speed info to ABS ECU.
-
Thanks Albitz, I might wip the nearside front wheel off tomorrow for a look, I have a vague memory of putting a connector or something back on near the hub when we did the tie rod.
-
Might be worth checking the connector is pushed fully home. :y

I suspect that the speedo also works from the same module sa the abs. Since recharging the battery. I have had no further problems. The batt. is about 8 months old and up to spec.
Most of my trips are pretty short and frequent during the day. I would think that all the stopping and starting will take its toll on the batt especially as the heater is on most of the time.
Also this bloody traffic master woman keeps shouting at me telling me that my sub has run out. I switch her off and she turns the radio on. How can i turn her off. >:(

I know, I think I was married to her once! :D :D :D

We have 2 different people with too different faults in this thread.
I think one is an ECU, the other is a sensor due to knacked bracket.
-
Ok TB which fault is mine :) (praying for a bracket)
I must be the bracket after having yet another thread read thru :D It helps to read things in the clear light of day when I havent had a drink :)
-
An hour after getting my heating working I went out and noticed both TC and ABS and car with a spanner thru it lights were on and speedo wasnt working, so looks like my ECU was on the way out, the car starts and drives ok and everything else works ok, what are my options chaps considering I am broke.
-
A suitable second hand ABS ECU/pump,usually around £40 from someone breaking a car on here,or elsewhere. The downside of that is there is no way of knowing how long it will last.
Recondition your one by a specialist company - I believe around £150.
New from Vauxhall - take out a second mortage.
P.S. Its always worth getting a suitable code reader plugged into the car to check the problem isnt a duff wheel sensor before you go any further. Its more likely to be the ABS ECU,but worth checking.
-
Absolutley no chance it's the sensor ?
-
Just modified my post above as you were posting yours. ;D

I haven't had the ABS and TC lights come on together for about a week, today I plugged an OBDII code reader that connects to a laptop into my mig and I saved this out to file

I cleared the codes and ran the test again and it came up with no fault codes, is it still looking like a dodgy ABS ECU ?
-
The ABS/TC ECU becomes faulty because Bosch used a series of tiny aluminium wires to connect the circuit board to the electrical connector.
The joints between the circuit board and the aluminium wires tend to fracture and cause an intermittent contact. Once the joints have failed they won't heal themselves.
-
Is it definitley the ABS/ECU Andy and not the wheel sensor ?
-
Iirc you should be able to go into one of the sections (chassis/brakes ?) and see if there is an ABS fault code.Havent done it for a while though,so may be wrong. :-\
-
Ok Albitz thanks, I did have a quick look in some of the other sections but just skimmed through 1 or 2 cant remember which, I will have a thorough look through them all when I hook it up next but might be tomorrow, I will report back with any other findings.
-
Bloody cars ::) I go out this morning and the TC and ABS lights are on solid and no speedo and car with a spanner(is that EML?) I get home dig out lappy connect up to Omega turn on and no TC ABS lights, I found the ABS and TC tests under the chassis section but it didnt throw up any faults, I found some tests where I think you can test each wheel speed, is it worth getting a mate to hold lappy and go for a drive and test these or not, or do I just need to test it when I have the ABS and TC lights lit up.
Thinking about it I may have made a schoolboy error by clearing the stored fault codes from when the lights where on earlier before I went into the Chassis section, when ABS TC come on next time I will not clear them before going into chassis section and having a look in there.

I have just taken the front n/s wheel off to inspect the abs sensor undid the screw waggled the sensor and the whole damn thing fell apart. I have disconnected it taped up the plug and now i'll take off the disc and knock the what is left of the sensor through. Has anyone out there got a front n/s abs sensor. I havn't got enough posts to post on the spare bit for sale so if anyone can help i would be gratefull.
-
Thats interesting Footloose, it was the front nearside I replaced a tie rod on just before this started, perhaps I need to take a look.

I think I have a couple that I managed to get off a car in one piece. Will have a rummage and get back to you. :y
I had similar with my car a year or so ago and it turned out to be a rear wheel sensor, but more often than not its the ABS ECU.
-
Yep - got two front and one rear here. :y
-
Thanks. Ive sent you a pm.
-
Sorry forgot to ask if you can send em by post.

No problem. :y
