Title: Why are our service stations so crap?
Post by: tunnie on 28 January 2013, 17:04:57
Our service stations are shite. Total. Utter. Fracking. Shite. Crap. Rubbish!

Pull into an Austrian/German/French one, huge amounts of fresh food, fish, salads hot food everything. Cooked fresh looked great, fresh sandwiches. What do you get in the UK? a Nuked Puka Pie and some cold chips?  >:(

On Ferry coming back, someone picked up a salad, not sure on nationality, could not quite tell. She asked if it had Balsamic vinegar inside to dress it?

Muppet behind serving desk? "Vinegar? Here yes madam", hands her Malt vinegar packets  ::) ::) ::)  ;D ;D ;D

She replied, "No, not Malt Vinegar, Balsamic"

Reply: "Er what?"

 >:( >:( >:( >:(

Damn disgrace.

/end rant

We are a reserved people in the main, and accept crap standards of service without complaining too much.
Im sure you remember as well as I do the standards of service in the U.S. - absolutely superb ime,but they wont settle for anything less over there, and take their custom elsewhere if they dont get it.

Most of them are run by disinterested franchisees who exist to extract as much money as possible from drivers in exchange for as little effort as possible.

And yes, we should vote with our feet really.

I was refreshed to come across this place on a trip to Scotland in September, though, so won't bother with any of the other grim places on that route again. Maybe the tide is turning.

Yep, it's one of the few where you can do what you need to - relax a little, rather than get that vein on your forehead throbbing. ;)

I do quite a lot of long distance motorway driving. London to Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, and Glasgow all quite frequently.

I go to quite a lot of effort to avoid using motorway services for any reason except a pee which is actually FREE !

On London to Glasgow, I know where to fill up with Shell just off the M6 ( Shell ? Yes I buy V Power and get airmiles !) I dislike paying 10p per litre over the odds just because it's a motorway.

It is very rare that I eat anything on a motorway, however I recently stopped to actually eat and the Burger King had run out of food, Amazing. A fast food place with no food.

One recent good thing is the introduction of M&S and Waitrose food shops  :y, better than effin Ginsters overpriced high fat whatever crapeats.

So yes. I agree our service station ARE crap ! They are designed for one purpose, to extract as much cash as possible from you while providing as little as possible.   >:(

The services on the continent must have improved recently then, as I used to think they were shite when I was driving regularly over there.   :-\  You even had to pay for a pee!!!  :o

Although the German services usually had nice cakes and strudel!  I like cake!!  :)

Of the pre-packaged pies and pasties available, Ginsters Cornish Pastie and Steak Slice are the best.

Now, IMHO, the best Cornish Pastie in the UK is the Medium Steak Pastie from Phelps in Hayle.  I make it my mission to try as many pasties as I can ;D

lol memories, whenever one of the transporters had to go to Hayle, the driver always had strict instructions,to go to phelps and bring back 15pasties plus whatever he wanted for himself, never had a problem geting the money either!! :y
