Title: LPG installation quote
Post by: jonny2112 on 01 February 2013, 18:01:33
Spoke to a local firm the other day just to enquire about costs for conversion, and was quoted £1300 all in. Thought that was pretty good considering  ???
It did include a 100l tank although I advised it would probably not fit. His argument waas to go for the biggest available to allow maximum range. I didn't let on that I knew anything about it as I don't really  :-X
But I have read bits and bobs on here, and use other's experiences, particularly the fact that a 90l tank was considered too large bearing in mind the amp shelf in the Elite  ;)
I didn't think to ask if a smaller tank (80l?) would make any difference to the price  ???

More importantly though, the price did include a 3 year warranty, which would be a bonus  :y

All hypothetical at the minute, but thought it was worth a quick phone call to weigh things up  :)

Are there plenty of places to fill up round your neck of the woods John ? Istr there may be one up on the Belfast Carriageway ?  :-\
You could save £400 - 500 going the DIY route. ;)
Ask some questions.A rule of thumb for quality installation is if they say they will drill the manifold in situ - run and dont stop.Similar if they  intend using straws imo. :y

Find out what system is being fitted for that money.

Absolutely  :y
It was just to give me an idea really, as one problem I face is the fact the pond lies in the way of expert 'hands on' OOF assistance if I get stuck  ;D

There is an outlet in Balloo industrial estate here, and a number of retailers in Belfast that I am aware of, though I confess I haven't investigated too much at this point.

One other question I didn't ask was which system was included? I've only heard of Stag and Prins, based on the forum  :-\
Must check the website to see if it mentions anything ......

For a Stag kit I was getting quoted 1500-1700 quid just to give you an idea. To buy the kit as I have has cost me 720 but I'm sure I brought some extra bits after that. Then I've got to get it certificated that's another 120. I think come the end of the day it will cost me grand all up.

Yep... Just a bit of a faff WRT the Bose shelf whilst fitting ;)

To the OP, that's a keen price TBH. I'd be surprised if the manifold comes off at that price but I could be wrong :y

You need to check what kit they're fitting ;)

Some fair points raised there, so thank you.
I'll need to check the kit, and the manifold issue, if I decide to consider it. I'll also have to find out if someone here would be willing to certify a DIY install. That may be a problem, but no harm in asking.

I would have been keener to go down the DIY route tbh, but we'll see .......

I know Telio may have some front end kits coming available, so I'll need to price up the rear end so to speak. As doz has said, he's paid around £840 ish so far, plus the time and graft taken.
Definitely food for thought.

I would go for the largest tank possible, purely based on my own experience of how much seems to get "lost" when filling, which I don't fully understand...

...if I fill mine before its getting quite low, my MPG for that previous tank drops dramatically (the more that was in the tank before filling, the worse it is).

I noticed those comments on another thread, about filling before empty. Rather strange!
In relation to the tank, I had talked myself into an 80l one based on some comments about faffing around with the Bose shelf, which I didn't fancy.
I do appreciate though, particularly in light of your own thoughts above, that the bigger may be the better in this respect. There's a link posted earlier on this thread about it. Must have a look!

on all the vehicles i have converted,i have always fitted the largest tank that would physically fit.(why would you do anything else?) ;)
Title: Re: LPG installation quote
Post by: feeutfo on 03 February 2013, 22:31:51
Only other consideration, is, say, an 80litre tank still leaves a part of the through space to put long items through. Which a 100litre will cirtainly block completely.

Oh, and the extra weight.

But other than that, bigger the better. :)

My comments are purely about actually fitting it into the car and fixing it down. Can be done easily enough though, just adds to the fitting time :y

I had a 90L, 400mm diameter (same as the 100L) tank in my saloon and it wasn't as straightforward to fit as the 80L ones but easily doable :y As Chris says though, you do lose the through-load capability completely though ;)

Just fitted a 90 litre tank in my saloon. It's a bit of a pain as the Bose black tray does require removing to fit. I guess I could of got a 100 litre tank to fit but you are going to be might tight up to the shock mounts and it may make getting the spare wheel in and out difficult. If you want a easy install fit a 80. If you like a challenge 90 or bigger.

Thanks for that  :y
If its a DIY job then I guess it may be an 80l tbh, but we'll see.
I'll need to address the certification issue first I guess, or the choice will be taken away from me.

Im still wondering why someone decided to put a 60L in mine.I did originally have plans to put a bigger one in,but Ive got used to the 200 mile (on a good day) range, and dont use the car much these days anyway.

90L here, 370-420 range depending. Still got space to put things through, such as my snowboard (but with the bindings removed)

Mine is too long though. Asked for 80L gave me 90L, it's not as far back as I would like. Gives nice storage behind back seats though to tank. Managed to squeeze small jack in there!

Spare wheel access is my only concern with the 100L tank ;)

Anyone with an Elite should seriously consider repositioning the Bose amp, and binning the stupid bloody Bose shelf.

Silly arse ;D

The wiring is long enough to remount the Bose in the rear cubby hole, where the CD Changer sits in PFL, but the shelf speaker wiring needs extending.

Interesting ......... and poor Albs  :D

The Kit we use is called OMVL. in a reply from the company contacted. Any knowledge of it? Oh, and they DO remove the manifold!

OMVL is an AEB based kit so lots of support around the country :y It's a low to mid range kit really but very capable and as good or better than the Stag kit :y

Got an email today from AGS saying that the smaller tank would drop the price to £1200.
Even better, though I'd still like to DIY. Wish I'd been a bit closer to Guffer, and his tank  :-\

Anyway, any of the kits currently on the bay worth considering?

There's nothing (much) wrong with a Stag kit IF you can actually get one from our usual supplier who was bloody brilliant back in the days when you could actually get in touch with him ::) The kit supplied is Comprehensive and tailored specifically to the Omega thanks to the unflagging efforts of Paul (Lazydocker) who has been metaphorically run ragged acting as go-between, and may be your best bet to get a Result! :y

Unfortunately Teilo is no longer the importer for Stag after he dropped them for various reasons. He is, at present, taking a break from the LPG industry and assessing the merits of returning :'( He might have a few kits left but is currently very hard to get hold of and that means I can't promise to get kits for anyone now.

If the situation changes I will update.

Well, just spoke to my insurers on LD's advice, and they won't cover a conversion at all. Renewal isn't due until July, so don't really know what to do now. I'll need to make a few enquiries first to see who, if any, may cover it.  :(

Who are you with? I'm with Direct Line, when it was first converted they just wanted to have it known to them, now it needs to be on the register.

I'm surprised they won't touch it at-all, sure they are plenty of providers out there that will  :y
