Title: Thankyou chrisgxer and Andy B
Post by: TheBoy on 03 February 2013, 10:37:08
Gayboy Gixer for fitted rear doughnuts on both my cars on subsequent weekends. With curry, obviously.

Andy B for making up some stainless spacers I needed for the front wishbones on TBE.

Cheers guys, really appreciated :y

Home by 11:30 ::), cruised nicely, though tramlining is still there. But we know the tyres are shit.

Back end is definately more connected, which in itself is giving some confidence when driving.

Don't worry about it, you don't need it.

4.5mm is too much, I had to grind down the ones Andy B made, as the bush seems to expand in situ. I reckon I took off about 2mm from each.

I suspect TB would suggest waiting before doing anything more.

He needs to eliminate tyres and set up before confirming anything further is worth pursuing.

Obviously those poxy sc5's are clouding the issue somewhat. :(

Such a shame that they're so bad >:( But they score highly in tyre tests :-X ::)

Fit a set of... oh never mind ::)

They'll save TB at least £300, worth a punt if only for that :-\

Without wanting to set off a tyre thread, I suspect they would not quite be suitable, purely on grip. Not tried them, but going on a comments made by someone I trust on tyres.

But who knows, as Mrs TB's mileage may increase by 15-20k a year, needs must, so she may end up with a set ;)

They won't be suitable for your expectation s of grip, from my (limited) experience of them so far, but would probably be grippy enough for Mrs TB :y

They are quite noisy though ::)

Yes a bit of noise, exaggerated on the brakes with the tread pattern buzzing a bit.
Nothing major, but its there.

But they are, for the money, impressive. IMO. Better than F ff fa fa faaa......

In their defence they were fitted to a car wearing its original 130k old suspension and no working radio ::) Geo is out on it too, as the osf is wearing on the inner edge :-\

Very much so :o :o

But, as you say, good value for money. I'll not give a final decision on them vs Alpha's until they've done more miles but they've been as good as them, possibly better in some respects, so far :y

See, I think the Accelera Alphas are quite a poor tyre (for my needs)...   ...which reading your comments, makes me think the Runways are not for me...

I've just said above that they aren't suitable for your needs ::) But may be suitable for Mrs TB if needs must ;)

They're good for the money... Very good :y Still too early for me to be subjective on comparing them against other tyres but if they can hold the performance throughout their life it will make them considerably better than the Alpha's, which drop off somewhat once half worn ::)

All things are relative. TB will never be completely happy with anything other than TT. And, as we are finding out too late, with good reason.

Runway are not for TB, not even close. He'll over drive them and destroy them in double quick time.

I know... I've said it twice now ::) ::) TBH, I'm not sure they're for me as a long term tyre... Possibly good for winter use but not as a summer tyre ::) Although I do have to be a bit more considerate with my driving most of the time now I have the puppy in the back ::)

I know :)

I'm just stating my reasons for why I just slapped on some RTs, and not Runways as some people had suggested - you have said they are comparable, possibly a small improvement, on Accelera Alphas, which I know are tyres not suitable for me.

As I've stated before, I think we are in a unique position to work out what suits different driving styles on Omegas...  ...its haow we go about it - I think Gixer's efforts to list ones which don't tramline, which I applaud those efforts, is flawed. I have expressed my concerns with those flaws I perceive, but even with those taken into account, I'm not sure if we will get the info we all need.

Yeah... For example, I'm in no position to judge tramlining because all the roads around me are shockingly poor ::) Plus I nkow there are minor "Issues" with suspension and set up on mine at the moment ;)

FWIW, I wouldn't have suggested the Runway's for you unless it is purely based on cost or to run whilst seriously playing with geometry ;) And even then, only with a warning ::) ;D

I think any information is better than none, personally i've always followed various people's recommendations with tyres and haven't been disappointed yet, certainly can give plenty of views on tyres that my cars where bought with but that's a little unfair as every Omega i've ever owned has had to have substantial chassis work before i've been happy with them.

I think I had the Sport Maxx TT before you and did comment on the noise... I think your lifters cancelled out that noise though!!!!

Given TBs reputation as a tyre eating fiend, it was as you say, a short term financial recommendation, as opposed to spending the same (relatively small) amount on some Autogrips or worse :y

Noise isn't an issue for me, if the other pros outweigh it - stability and consistency first and foremost.

TB 's concerns are valid IMO. But that shouldn't stop us.

If nothing else we can suit some personal preferences. And narrow down or eliminate some of the bad options. Hopefully with a chance to compare for members.

There may be some progress on a test site btw. :)

If nothing comes up down that way then I could probably find somewhere suitable up here... But it's a long way for most people to come ::) Somewhere more central is a better bet :y
