Title: Wiper Problem
Post by: dbug on 08 February 2013, 18:13:54
Have a problem with the wipers on the Estate.  They are tending to become entangled.  The drivers side wiper when parked feels rigid and normal but the passenger side is less rigid and can be moved either up or own without too much effort.  Has something come loose, and can it just be tightened, or am I looking at a more drastic solution?  Help appreciated :y

Whoops its the drivers side thats "loose" and the passenger side that feels ok.  B*ggers up my "short term" fix of taking one wiper off  :(

Might be slipping on the arm, pop both arms off and just clean up the sprocket thing. Make sure it's free of road crap and such, then re-fit.

Worth turning the wipers on with the arms off, to allow them to settle/get in the right place  :y

thanx Tunnie - will have a look tomorrow.  Definately seems linkage related - anyone else got any ideas or a schematic of the linkages?

There's two connecting rods with nylon ball joints in the mechanism. These wear, or the crimp on the rod to ball joint(iirc) becomes loose.
Thinking further, it depends which wiper is driven first by the mechanism, as to which rod affects one wiper, or both.
Motor>rod>drivers wiper>rod>pas wiper iirc. So if it was the first rod in the mechanism, both wipers would be loose, if its the second rod thats worn then the pas side would be loose/too much play and travel, i think. :-\ ;D

So if its drivers side, it may be loose on the splined shaft or the splined shaft circlip(?) has come loose. Otherwise both would have equal play. (Or I have it arse backwards)

If it is play in the connecting rod, they aren't too bad from a dealers. Btw.

Problem solved - simple fix, the 13mm nut that holds arm onto wiper spindle had worked slightly loose - retightened it and all ok now. :y  Will keep an eye on it though.
You were correct Tunnie - thanks :y
