Ive got an oil leak on my f/l 2.6 mv6 and think it the right bank gasket. Ive been quoted £200 to have it done but thought i would give it a bash. I dont have all the tools to do it but a mate said he would do it for a ton. Whilst i was 1/10th into doing i noticed i have oil in my air intake system some dry some not. My car has been smoking whilst driving and more so under load. This must be down to the oil in the intake but why is there?

That's usually down to the breathers whic recycle oil gasses in to the intake as they condense they can form an oil like substance in the intake. Nothing to worry about but make sure clean the breathers otherwise you'll be doing this job again soon. Blocked breathers are the biggest cause for this type of leak and it would also explain the amount of oil you can see.

Thats good news. Is it an easy job i can do myself or should i get my mate to do as he does the gaskets?
-
very easy, it's in the maintenance guides.
for 100 notes make sure your friend uses the correct sealant, genuine vx gaskets (cheap one are a false economy as they last a few months at best) and cleans the breathers.

Thanks for help and the heads up

And uses a torque wrench which will allow him to tighten the camcovers to 8nm only. ;)
-
he works in garage so it will all be on auto data but thanks anyway

The breathers should be cleaned as part of the cam cover gaskets. Print the how to off and give it to your mate

Seeing as the parts, trade, are around £75 for the essential genuine parts, ensure he doesn't use £15 pattern.
AndyC can provide the parts, mail order, at a good price :)
