Title: Opel Omega FL 2.5 DTI
Post by: Karolis on 14 February 2013, 14:36:43
Hello everyone. I'm a proud owner of a MY2002 Omega FL saloon with Y25DT engine and 5 speed auto. It's a shame UK buyers didn't get this engine - it's silky smooth (for an oil burner, of course), delivers great fuel economy (I'ts possible to squeeze out 50 mpg on an A road) and, with proper mods -pretty fast (one of the guys over here with a BMW 3.0D turbo, injectors, custom 3" exhaust and remap got 270 Hp and 370 lbs ft out of this motor).

My car has almost all of the toys that were available on the FL (HID lamps, BOSE, CID, leather, phone, auxiliary heater, rear blind, etc.), except electrically folding side mirrors and heated rear seats.

So, here goes:

We get quite a lot of snow over here, so the LSD and ESP works overtime :) Even though the car has winter tires, I always carry a shovel in my boot... Saved my ass quite a few times.

Cheers!

Quick question, why are the wheels in your last photo different ? Was this an earlier or later pic?
All the others have he same alloys as I have on my MV6, and I think suit the car very well.
Also, the silver surround on yours is that a modification you have made? Only ever seen the silver on MV6's, all others have the wood effect.

Just seen you mention winter tyres, mystery solved!  ;D
Title: Re: Opel Omega FL 2.5 DTI
Post by: Karolis on 14 February 2013, 14:56:10
Yep, those are 15" OEM steel wheels with 205/65 winter tires. 17" alloys are for the summer season only :)
The silver surround is original part that came with the car. Door inserts are of the same color (as is the gear lever surround).

Well, maybe it would, but I prefer the cleaner (if a little bit duller) boot lid shape as it is now.

Did the Omega's have those?.. Haven't seen any Vauxhall Omega's with them for sure ?

BTW, these engines have the notorious BMW swirl flaps. This is a pic of my intake manifold:

One of the flaps was already packing its bags for the journey down under:

When it fails, it gets sucked into combustion chamber and bangs the bejesus out of the piston. And, for a good measure, takes out the turbo, too.
Thats Bayerische Motoren Werke technology for you :)

Vauxhall buyers weren't so lucky. Anyway, this is a rare option even on high-spec euro cars.

Found a video of them mirrors in action:

BTW, was this ever put into production? (AFAIK it was meant for Opel FL estates only)

What would the folding mirrors be called over there, I'm assuming its not a straight translation when searching on eBay?

Been on a 60 mile trip today. Tried to be as gentle with the throttle as possible (not exactly my cup of tea ::) ). These are the results:

Lovely car. Thanks for the pictures.

The BMW swirl flaps problem. After how many kilometres do they fail please? Are they relatively easy and cheap to replace?

Can't tell the exact mileage (it depends on how the car was driven - city or motorway driving), but THEY ALL FAIL EVENTUALLY :)
The flaps are disintergrating from metal fatigue. BMW addressed this problem in 2004, by introducing stronger metal fixings, but they are known for failing, too. So in 2009 BMW got rid of them completely.

It's an easy fix if you can do this by yourself (takes a couple of hours). To get access to the flaps, the whole intake manifold has to come off. They are not replaceable - you have to buy NEW intake manifold from BMW. And that one comes with the same flaps that will eventually fail again :)
So people (including me) are just ripping them out and blanking the holes.

A bit of spit 'n polish for my miggy:

Changed all the brakes (discs + pads all round), bled the system, changed filters, oil, coolant, alternator + A/C belt and all the pulleys. Some of them were a real bugger to reach!

One of the rear parking sensors has gone bad, so all I get is a constant beep when the car is put in reverse. Where is that damn speaker? Would like to shut it up till I find a replacement part.

Very nice car. :y Would love the fuel economy you are getting. My 3.2 Auto will give no better than 30mpg and that is on motorway driving, down a hill and with the wind behind me. :(
