Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does that mean? (I have an iPhone4 inherited(?) from #1 child, and have not much idea how to use it to its full advantage). I am on PAYG, and am not quite sure how much internet charges will be if I try to use it. :-\ :-\ :-\
-
I also inherited one from eldest when the 5 came out. I gave it back last week, unused in my ownership.
Strictly hetro me. ::)

I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I hate being left behind by technology. :(

I dont care tbh. Most of it doesnt interest me. ;)

For me, the primary reason for having a smartphone is for email, as well as a SMS/Phone device. Hence, gayPhone is the only (current) choice. webOS based devices also have a good email client, but the Palm phones are really bad.
Obviously, for others, there are other primary reasons for having a Smartphone... ...can't think of any, mind ;D

Yeah, he does that. It's that binary throttle thing, its either on or off, its either good or bad, gay or not. Except the last one is reversed, he actually likes gay. Hence he's an apple owner, and promotes apple to everyone else. Including me, I'm being groomed I tell you, HEEEELLLLLLP.

These new fangled phones just come in handy some times.
Mines the competition in the form of a samsung s3
On the way to the south of France via Dover, pull over for fuel and a stretch. Other half says "wheres my crutch?"
In the house probably where you left it. Definatly need one so..
Quick google shows local mobility stores in the Felixstowe area, Phone call to see whats available, another tap and the sat navs plotting directions.
Job done in an area you havent got a clue in 20 mins.
-
They have their uses :y
But why on earth were you in Felixstowe if travelling from Solihull to Dover? :-\
-
If you're using Ver 6.1 of the OS I would suggest a quick trip to apple.com to fix a little problem with it ::)
-
Began with an F anyway ::)

And if i volunteer for the Oof express one day be afraid, very..

Good example of what a smartphone can do. All in your pocket.
Some say, they don't need one. Like my Dad.
"Bah, I don't need a mobile phone". He scorned. The family buy him one to keep in touch, sisters health issues etc. next thing you know, he's texting away, making calls, messing with ring tones and can't put the thing down.
Smartphone comes out, "Bah, I don't need one of those, I've got Internet on a lap top...blah blah..." Show him the smartphone, web access, email, sat nav etc
Anyway...he's now running a top end smartphone, buying ebay items on the fly, pinging off emails, picture messages, video calling, and can't put the thing down.
Yeah Dad, you don't need one. Right. ;D
Everyone needs one. Those that say they don't, technophobes. :y

I've got a common or garden PAYG phone, costs me about £25 per year, so I don't need one :P

Got given a work gay phone, it lasted 4 hours before I broke the screen! :D

OK, does anybody actually know what an 'e-mail client' is? Or is this just another of those meaningless phrases used by techno-nerds to baffle us mere mortals? >:( >:( >:(

He means decent integration with Microsoft Exchange, which is what most companies use to handle corporate e-mail, calender events & contacts.
iOS happens to do this quite well out of the box, I did have an Android for a while few months back. Exchange integration was fine for me, but I was only using it for mail.

Just been forced by work into getting an Iphone..much to my annoyance. >:(
For years the trusty nokia 6300 was all that was needed to make calls and the occasional text.As have been with Orange for years they even reduced my contract down to £12=50 a month for a sim only. :D
Then 2 months ago the comapny that I contract to decided that they would change their entire reporting system from a Human to an App.This has ment that 6 of us have had to ditch our existing phone contracts and get this Iphone thing. :(
Good old Orange mobile wanted £159 to buy out the remainder of my contract and then an upfront charge of £49 with a monthly rate of £35 for me to us this App less than twice a week. :o
You can see where the costs have been saved by the Company in manpower and just passed onto to the contractors. >:(

I found it in Wikipedia: "An email client, email reader, or more formally mail user agent (MUA), is a computer program used to access and manage a user's email."
So now we all know. It doesn't help me understand my iPhone though. ??? ??? ???

just a thought chris will you be able to type better on it :D

I only use my galaxy for personal mail but it does it well.

Although, its much lighter than the 4. And the wider screen helps in safari in landscape mode, with toolbars disappearing with just a little transparent back button in one corner, and an expand button in the other to bring the tool bars back.
So at least I can see that I can't type, but that's fine, as it pisses AndyP and Esta off no end. :y

IME, Android email only works well if using gmail and google apps. Would you trust Google with such access to private info?
Even trying to use bog standard IMAP, there is no usable client out there for Android

Thanks J, but why is it called client? This is one definition I found, which, to me at any rate, is still not clear:
Computers. a workstation on a network that gains access to central data files, programs, and peripheral devices through a server.

Correct, email is a client - server setup (for most scenarios).
-
In same way your browser is an OOF client for the server that runs the place

FFS, so what is better about iOS over the others? Christ it's like getting blood out if a rather stone this. ;D
-
For me what sets it apart is the ability for it to check 6 of my email accounts, collate all the mails in one place (all inboxes) or view them indivdually as I wish, along with managing imap folders well.
Whenever I want to send a mail, I do it all from the same place, in the same client. Just works as it should.
Trying to do this on Android was a non starter, the default email client only wanted to deal with 1 account at one time, plus run the gmail app to access my google accounts separately, and it wouldnt even collate those few accounts to one place, every inbox had to remain isolated. extra work every time I wanted to use a mailto link to decide on the sending account and program.
I could only realistically manage 3 of my accounts on my old android whereas my Iphone manages all I throw at it perfectly and in an user friendly manner.
My android was an older version, but when playing with current ones, my issues seem to still exist

As I keep saying, it works. An email client isn't complex. Google want to tie you to gmail, and 3rd party ones are even more limited. Gooseberry traditionally relied on additional, proprietry subscriptions, and you'd have to be bonkers to buy into gooseberry 10. MS have manage to squeeze out failure from the jaws of victory. Leaving crApple, who have managed to design something usable.
For the record, Nokia have never managed to do email properly on any of their smartphones

I'm sure I had three accounts on an n95. But then I can barely remember what happened yesterday. :-\
-
Certainly N97 IMAP implementation was cumbersome. Had no other options beyond IMAP for shared access
-
Imap and pop3, defo on n95. I remember buggering about with settings for those.
Smtp rings a bell. But I don't actually know what that is...?

Yeah, that's all it can manage. POP3 doesn't really work if you need mail on multiple devices. IMAP works better, but many implementations are clunky/cumbersome and ultimately often unreliable
