Hi guys, looking to replace my thermostat this week, I've noticed there seems to be an option to buy the thermostat insert on it's own or with the housing. Why is it necessary to buy the housing as well? I've never seen this on any of the other cars I've owned over the years, thanks.
My car is a 2001 3.2 elite.

It's not unusual to find that you can't remove the thermostat without damaging the housing.
I'm going to be doing mine soon and I will be buying a housing simply because, knowing my luck the bugger will break on removal!

There is a very good chance of damaging the housing when you separate it from the transfer pipe. Having to cut it off isn't unheard of. I paid less than £20 delivered for mine, by the OE supplier. It has exactly the same numbers and casting flash, but a very half hearted attempt to grind the letters 'GM' off it. The thermostat on it's own is about a fiver less.
Unlike you I have had to replace housings before, when the fixing bolts have seized in the casting.

As well as the above, bear in mind it's bugger to get to, and if you only have one bit, the Law of Sod will determine that you need the other bit ...... & by then Vauxhall will be shut or not have it till a week on Tuesday. ;)

If you get a new housing check the thickness against the old one .. new ones can be thinner and the bolts "bottom out" .. which can lead to leaks or, if you get heavy handed .. a split head if you overtighten to try and stop the apparent leak !! shorter bolts is the answer :)

Or spacer washers or cut the longer ones down by the appropriate amount ;)

For parts see Andyc in recommended suppliers, he'll check your reg and listing of superseded stats, of which there are many I gather, and make sure you get the right stat and length bolts.
It's worth getting the stat in housing and the transfer pipe and seals, as the two Weald together after over 10 years or so. Once the barstuard bolt is removed its a bugger to get the transfer pipe put of the stat.

Agreed. :y As already said, definitely worth having all these parts to hand as they can be a right sod to separate. Something will get chewed up so it's just easier to have all the parts so you can just get stuck in. :y
