Title: Estate rear shocks

Hi all  i have a problem on my 97 tourer estate, the rear drivers side upper shock mount has destroyed the rubber bush and the shock rod with the nut at the top has come up through the metal cover into the rear of the car. At the moment i cant tell you anymore than that, how is the upper shock mount arranged & does anyone have a picture of the rear shock mounting pls :'(

From memory only


Shocker shaft / Large flat steel washer / rubber gromit / another flat steel washer / Nyloc nut (17mm iirc)

The gromit is a total ba****d to get in.
I ended up sticking it in the oven and using lots of silicon grease to get the bugger back in  ;)


Or pop the other side off and have a peak  ;)

As far as i can see the hole in the underside of the body is not damaged in any way so i guess it is just the mount that has failed or is that part of the shock and not replaceble on its own.
Shockers are irmscher units and have about 35,000 miles on them, bit of a bugger if i have to replace them for std units. :(

On mine, it was just a case of the top nyloc nut that is underneath the metal panel had worked loose and popped off so the next time I went over a speed bump (at the legal limit  :-X :-X), the springs / shocks extended and out the shaft popped  :(
The only part I couldn't fix was the plastic sleave that covers the chrome shaft  :(

Mine did that ::) you can buy all the components as a kit ftom Vx, £16-20 per side iirc. AndyC is the person to ask :y

The important part is the metal bush that goes over the shock rod and fits into the rubber bush. This stops the rubber from pushing or pulling through the chassis.

Makes sense when you see the kit :y

Update,
i have had more time to look at the shocker on my tourer, it now seems that the shocker has seized and the rod will not travel up and down at all and the rod is slightly bent so i will have to replace the shocks, i wont be able to afford to replace with new irmscher shocks so will go with new GM or after market, anybody have any idea's on GM prices and if aftermarket  what do you you guys recommend.?

GM self levellers are approx £95 each :-\ Non self levelling, (but will need springs too) are £45 up :y

If Irmscher shocks with suitable springs then either lowered sports chassis from face lift mv6 or Bilstein b4.

Gm lsc ones would be cheaper on tc I would think? :)

My tourer has KYB heavy duty springs fitted so i think bilstein b4's will be a waste of money, it also does not have self leveling suspension so was thinking along the lines of either monroe or KYB.

Yes /No         what do you think?
