Must disagree .. in the 70's I was driving a banger, living in rented accomodation, and always wondering how I could afford to do anything - holidays ?? no chance ... :(

Now I own my house, I have just bought another Omega - out of choice - I holiday in France for 3 weeks every year and spend over half my weekends away in the 'van in UK. I indulge my hobbies of photography, computing, gardening without major worries and there is always a beer in the fridge and a few ( :) ) bottles of malt on the shelf.

I retire (aged 57) in 3 months and my pension will probably be more than I dreamed of earning in the 70's.

:)

If you use the "hours worked to buy it" principle .. we are all far BETTER off then in the 70's IMHO

I'm in my Mid 40s ....   a was around and remember it, i just didn;t have to put my hand in my pocket to pay for it....

:D

no, my point was more like this.

Miggy equivalent...  in late 72 approx £2k new.
House 8K

yamaha electone organ, top of the range.  £10K

2002
Miggy £30K
House £350K

Yamaha electone top of the range organ...   £8K

.

now you do the maths

It depends on which way you look at it:- How many people had tv's & other electrical goods back then, clothes are more affordable (i know it's because it's all made in the East) More people have cars now. I bought my first VCR back in the early 80's & it was nearly £300.00. You can buy a home cinema package for that now.
It seemed like your money went further, but i still recall my mum moaning at an increase in fuel cost, because it went up to 46p a gallon  :'( :'( :'( :'(
In certain ways you're right though  :y

You could still get hold of components to build valve amps then, today the parts are like hen's teeth and very expensive
Still I now have a couple of solid state Guitar Amps from the 80's which is were designed to emulate a Mesa-Boogie and weigh in at a fraction of their weight so my back suffers less!

You could be right - £20 for 1 square metre of coir matting.  If the cat spoils this one, we may well settle for a lumpy black and white job inside the front door. >:(

Yup, you're so right. £60-£70-£80 for a pair of trainers just because the other kids will take the beep out of them. We had pimsoles & that's all. Then there's the designer labels, it's all ballards

I went to live in another country in 1974.  After a few years, I got very homesick, and wanted to come back to the UK :(

When we eventually did move back, I realised that I was homesick for 1974 :'(

That's probably why I'm such a miserable sod >:(

I was 5 too. My dad had a Maxi 8-) XPU879L.

I wonder if I should look it up in the DVLA database?  ;D

I preferred the Triumph Herald he had before that though. Can't remember the number. Was a D reg though, and pretty rotten IIRC.

IIRC the humble Maxi was the first 5 speed, 5 door hatchback, set a bit of a trend didn't it ? I could be wrong though, and often am.

I was there for 3 weeks in the summer for 3 years running AFAIR.

Is there a database we can look up up cars, or is it just a case of seeing if the plate is still in circulation?

Bought my first Vauxhall in 1973 a VX 4/90 2.3LTR MAN/OD.
cost me just under £1700 new. (That was just after buying our first house, in Upminster, Essex for £12,250)
Sold the VX to my Uncle, & bought a Daimler V8 250, now that was a proper car.
For me, the level of disposable income in the '70s was far greater than it is now.

Mr Wood, I trust that was a kiss for the car & not me ;D
The engine designer also designed engines for Triumph motorcycles, using the same dimensions, but 6 more cylinders.
I now have a 3.4ltr MK2, which has the old XK engine, & while nowhere near as smooth as the V8, is 50% more powerful. :y
Sold the Daimler to a friend at work, it was then stolen & used in a ram raid :'( :'( :'(

I bought a 1964 3.4 S-Type in 1973.  It cost me £300.  The wife made me sell it in 1974 so we could buy a new living room carpet.  That may have been a mistake... :'(

I wouldn't want anyone to think my life is ruled by floor coverings...

Actually, the Jag wasn't running all that well, we never used it and it kept getting broken into.  We were living in the centre of Amsterdam.  Over a bar.  And we didn't have a cat.

In fact, I got more money for the car than I paid for it, which made me quite happy until I found out they were quite rare (rear?) over there, and I could have got about four times as much.   :'(

I was 11 in that wonderfull summer of '76 and yes it seemed to go on forever or is that just how I remembered it? I remember coming back from Swindon visiting relatives in my Dad's Vauxhall Victor (see, it runs in the family) up the M4 and everywhere was brown and blasted, so dry. I don't remember any rain that summer. Happy days.....

There was no rain that summer, my wife was pregnant (daughter born August 8th)
Lots of grass & woodland fires though
We were rebuilding an old cottage in Bursledon & it was ideal weather for it, no interuptions by rain, & everything dried out beautifully, mortar, plaster, paint etc.
