if its auto and its an elite the chances of it having a slipper are nil to not a lot,if its a manwell and the 1st owner specd a slipper, take the slipper out and sell it seperatly.

the only way is to pop out a driveshaft and count the pinions. 2=open, 4=LSD

Jack up one rear wheel clear of the ground, start engine, switch off traction control, enage gear.  If your car falls off the jack and smashes into whatever is in front of you, you have LSD. If the jacked up wheel just spins round (which is most likely), you don't.  Simple.  Take care and don't sue me I can't say I've tried this with a mig but it certainly worked with an old cortina - it wouldn't move because one wheel was off the ground. I think most cars will be the same, the majority of cars are only 1 wheel drive and most 4WD cars are only 2 wheel drive.

That only works for a clutch type diff or a viscous diff.  If its a Torsen diff, they require at least token grip on both wheels before the diff will start to limit slip.  ie they are next to useless in very slippery conditions or with one wheel in the air.  My Omega has a Torsen diff as does my MX-5.  I have two other cars with clutch type diffs.

Give it death from a standing start and see if it leaves number elevens or number ones on the road?!? Although to be honest I've never been able to get an auto Omega to peel out unless its raining.

Omegas only came with clutch-type LSD

Any clutch-type diff still has planet gears which will allow a free wheel to spin to some degree.

Only two ways to tell for sure :-

1, have a look

2, check for the grip-and-release on very tight turns such as tee-junctions

My 2.5 TD auto would definitely pull away with more of a chirp than my 3 litre auto, would hardly describe it as a burnout though, not even with a foot on each pedal! Maybe I just have too much mechanical sympathy...

Just had a look at the Haynes manual and it says there is a ident plate which tells you the final drive ratio and if it`s LSD or not, do the diffs actually have this plate on the underside?

there's a code on the build plate next to the VIN plate under the bonnet, but I don't know what the code is. There are people on here who can de-code your VIN.

There is also a plastic bung fitted to the fill plug on LSD to remind you to fill with special oil only. But it's only a bung pushed into the hex of the fill plug - I've maybe only ever seen one or two.
