Last weekend i used GUNK to totally degrease the engine bay , like the gunk burning off smell , after a week of running the car im still getting a funny smell still from engine bay :( I left the car running while i popped into the chinese and looking out the window it seemed to be pouring out steam from the exhaust pipe ...it was cold outside but steam seemed excessive :-\ it hasnt boiled over and temp light hasnt come on but had to top up coolant quarter of litre , maybe worrying too much but thoughts are head gasket :(
Pug 106 ::)

Any creamy substances on the dipstick/filler cap? Had several 1.1 106's a couple had, had HG replacements at some point, that's not saying it is that.

Slight mayo on filler but nothing no different to omega on short journeys , no mayo on dipstick though ;)

There's not always mayo on the dipstick, but it's a good sign there isn't. What about in the coolant bottle?

Nowt too much to worry about if dipstick is clear :y

No mayo in that although coolant was changed 3 weeks ago and was filthy , sure i should not be getting any engine smell in the cabin anyway :-\ :-\

Wonder if there is a heater vent pipe to the cabin loose or something , its not exhaust fumes its like heat fumes off the engine once its up to temperature ? Maybe needs another coolant change .

I did think that kev but the gunk smell surely shouldnt be coming inside the car :( I dont even know if its got a pollen filter ;D :(
-
Sod the smell, find out where the coolant is going.
The fact there is no mayo on the dip stick means jack, it only tells you there is no water getting in the oil.....it could be going elsewhere either externaly, internaly or into a pot.
The burning smell is probably the electrics, standard fit on french stuff ;D ;D :y

Still burning but not caught fire yet ... seems to have stopped smelling as bad as it was , wont be using that Gunk on the engine again :( Topped coolant up but only about half a cup , this is the coolant settling to its proper level after it was changed :) Cant wait to see what condition the starter motor is in , if its anything like the engine it will be covered in goo :(

Not really kev , just done a full service and 2 new driveshafts and exhaust £80 all in , oh and the sensor for ecu £10 . Just got to inspect and clean the starter motor , so might have to replace that for £40 . Wear and tare items really . Hopefully get it sorted at weekend ;)
