Title: Up in flames
Post by: jimbobmccoy on 12 March 2013, 07:54:20
Having just got home last night I parked on the drive and went in doors.
Few minutes latter and I walked through the hall and noticed the hazards going on the car through the porch window.
Stuck my head out to see why and saw smoke billowing and paint bubbling........yes, the car was aflame!

I had an extinguisher upstairs so grabbed that, gave a squirt under the bonnet which quelled the smoke long enough to risk popping the bonnet, and I then managed to more or less get the engine fire out before the extinguisher ran out.

The bonnet lining was still on fire, and eventually dropped on to the engine, which reignited, which I again managed to control with buckets (well a large measuring jug) of water (and the remnants of the melon that was in it) until the fire brigade arrived and properly put it out.

Needless to say the omega is dead, but thankfully the drive is ok, as is the house, which if I hadn't have seen the hazards, or had an extinguisher, may not have been.

It's a 99 elite estate, is it worth claiming off insurance, or just scrapping it?

I suspect it will have been caused by the power sounder which is a common one on the Omega and it's always recommended to remove it :'(

It depends how much your excess is and how many years no claims you have. If you have a big excess and a good few years no claims then personally I wouldn't bother

Think the power sounder had been removed.

Seems to have started from area around the oil filler neck, as that's where I first saw bubbling paint, and where the fire damage is worst.

I would imagine I may get 3-400 tops, which after excess is taken wouldn't be worth the time and added expense at next renewal.

What would the scrap value be do you think, and would they take it stripped out and with fire damage?

Thats unusual, are the cam cover gaskets leaking?

Scrap value is probably about £150 and they will take it partially stripped. I would remove the cats if they are genuine and weigh them in seperately, there about another £100 plus anything else you can sell on Ebay ect :y

I think they may have gone in a big way on the way back home, as I have just seen a trail of oil leading round the block up to my drive!

I plan on getting another omega, so will strip what I want from this and then scrap it's I guess.
Good advice on the cats, thanks, I will have a look under the car at the weekend and see what's what
