Title: The Pope & Dave Allen
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 12 March 2013, 18:53:57
I have just seen on the news that the Cardinals in the Enclave of the Vatican have released black smoke to confirm that the first ballot has failed to establish one of their number as the new Pope.

When I was viewing that I had this mad thought about how the late and great Dave Allen would have interrupted the proceedings in his irrelevant way.  Would he have set a scene of groups of Cardinals playing cards, smoking and drinking, whilst telling one of their number to chuck coal on the fire to create smoke "to keep the masses happy"? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Sorry if I offend anyone by this thought, by as Dave always said, "May your God go with you" :D :D ;)

I was just thinking about this too  ;D
Dave Allen was great, and Dermot Morgan liked to have his own interpretation  :D

It all depends on your point of view about the Catholic faith and religion in general.  To some Dave was terribly insulting and irrelevant of their deep held faith, to others like me he so often hit the nail on the head and gave very true relevant statement in the form of wonderful sketches and jokes.  So Steve the answer is Dave can be both irrelevant and relevant. ;) ;)

OK Lizzie.........In your original post you said 'irrelevant' when you meant 'irreverent'. I tried to be clever....but I'm obviously wasting my time. ;D

This sounds a bit like an EU referendum. Keep voting until you get the right answer. ;D

As a  kid I always wondered what happened to his finger.

I still do. How sad is that? ;)

Allen lost the top of his left forefinger above the middle knuckle, after catching it in a machine cog. However, he enjoyed telling many differing stories as to how that happened and this became a minor part of his act. One version was that his brother John had surprised him by snapping his jaw shut when they were children, resulting in him biting it off. Another was that it was done deliberately to avoid National Service. A further explanation he gave on his programme Dave Allen at Large was that he often stuck his finger in his whisky glass and it had been eaten away by "strong drink". He also said the cause was repeated brushing down the dust from his suit with his hand causing the finger to be worn away. One of his memorable stand-up jokes was that, when he was a boy, he and his friends would go see a cowboy movie at the local cinema, then come out all ready to play "Cowboys and Indians". Staring down at his truncated finger, he would mutter, "I had a sawn-off shotgun." On his show he told a long, elaborate ghost story, ending with "something evil" attacking Allen in a dark and haunted house. Allen grabbed and bit the attacker, the studio lights came back up, and it was his own left hand

I know!
It does make you feel old at work when something/someone crops up in conversation & they've no idea what-so-ever what you're talking about. Or when you say 'do you remember XXXXX' & then realise they were even born then!  ??? ??? ;D ;D ;D

He succumbed to political correctness early on & had his cig taken from him. The 'whisky' was apparently just ginger ale  ;) ;)
