Its that simple!!!
Was at a mates and was amazed with graphics of FIFA 2007 on the 360....got all the consoles in the house or rather Markiec junior has!!
Its wheted my appetite for the xbox 360 even though it seems really NOISY!!
Found a great deal in Argos - £279 for full system, any game ( id go for pro evo 6) and an extras pack ( extra controller, steering wheel and loads of other bits) theres about a £120 saving apparently.
So should i go for it or not?
If i do it means tomorrows gonna be expensive - £500+ for vx parts for the SRI, and an xbox.
Note to self - must go to work on Mondays its cheaper!! :y
-
You know you wanna. ;D

Naaaaah. I'm waiting for delivery of a Nintendo Wii.
Now you're talking! :)

Mrs has jst pre ordered for juniors christmas but tbh not a `tendo fan...that could change though as i`ve heard good things :y
-
I have a 360, though I only use as a Media Center extender, not really for games (other than the freebie xbox line download demos)
It is noisy - they all are....
-
Got one for my boy for xmas so don't know if it's better than the xbox or not yet. All the reviews say it is though.
-
Yes the 360 is excellent... but!
I would hold fire for 2 reasons.
1. The PS3. It will redefine gaming, simple as that. While I am no fan of Sony generally, they sure know how to make consoles!
2. Since the PS3 is coming, how long before Microsoft drop the price of the 360, to get as many people buying it before the release of the PS3.
Oh and there is the little matter of Nintendos offering.... ;)
-
Thats a good point Dave - my heart says buy it - but i guess in 3 - 4 months i will be looking at the xbox price and the ps3 and thinking...why did i buy - lets see if i can get through the day off without making a rash purchase :) :y
-
Another thing to consider is what do you have at the moment and do you still want to play the games you have for that system?
I was put off sony by the number of failures I had with the PS2, after 4 lasers they changed it for a new console. The new one is fine it just put me off a bit!
Even so I will probably end up with the PS3 and a 360 through pester power!
-
i know what you mean salty - my boy has evey console going including the handhelds and he is gettig the wii thingy for christmas!
I did considor the games i play and its generally fifa, and pro evo series.......so ps2 /x box is fine rght now - as the 360 would be for me i am going to wait and get the ps3 ....theres one game the x box cant run - GT4 ( presume sony will release something of the ilk for the new machine ::) )
cheers
:y

If you use MCE, the xbox360 is def the console to go for...
And if you don't use MCE, you want to get one ;)

They do make great consoles now, but did't before.
The original playstation one was designed by Nintendo! They didn't like for some insane reason, and sold the design rights to Sony...
They thought their N64 with its "cartridges" was the way forward! :-?

Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE). Seems bizarre, but plug it into your TV, and it becomes a hub for your media...
Records programs easily (similar in function to Sky+), plays DVDs, plays all your MP3s etc, views digital camera pictures. Can get additional plugins to do loads of other stuff. And because its a computer, you can surf the web and don anything you can do with XP (assuming your TV is clear enough)

The PS3 will be overpriced and we europeans have to wait until spring next year before we can overpay for one. Feels like an appartheid for european gamers. Sony are self-abusers (IMO).
While the features on the PS3 look good, its nothing the 360 can't do at the moment, or cant be upgraded to do (except a blu-ray drive - but lets leave that debate until HD-DVD and Blu-ray have had their real battle).
For gaming re-definition, PC's have always led the way. They don't appeal to a mainstream audience though.
In case you hadn't noticed, I'm in the XB360 camp. If not for the features, then purely for the fact that Sony hate Europe.

Wait for the January Sales!

Unwanted gifts on ebay

Couldn't agree more ;)

Yes agreed, PC gaming is always going to be better. :)
I am no lover of either organisation but Sony certainly don't hate Europe. In fact the UK is one of their biggest markets, so they will not have delayed unless they had to.
Remember also the European model will probably come with more than the US model...at a price of course!
Overpriced? I think the 360 is overpriced right now. £199 is the price I am expecting it to drop to quite soon.
We always pay over the odds for new technology anyway, the price of being an early adopter.
As for the Blu-Ray HD-DVD battle? That will be interesting....
-
xbox 360 is 199 for core version...
-
Think I've seen the core version at £189.99 somewhere. The only bind is needing the hard drive to play your old xbox games.
-
I only bought an Xbox earlier this year. Hadn't had a games console since Atari. My only computer game, other than solitaire, is Lemmings. Not exactly excited about Xbox 360 or PS3. Might feel differently if the games weren't cr@p. Halo is good, don't know any others like it, driving games are rubbish. Even Halo is only interesting for so long. Why is everyone interested in the consoles when the games suck? Just a higher def waste of money IMO.

As for the Blu-Ray HD-DVD battle? That will be interesting....
This is going to be interesting, and is a fight between two groups
HD-DVD
Toshiba & Microsoft, Chinese players
Blu-Ray
Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, ect - basically all big home electronic companies not called Toshiba

BTDT w/ betamax. They already have a disc that supports both formats at the same time, so may be a whole lot of nothing.

360 can only play a few old xbox games...

Sony have bet the entire company on BD.
What a shame that industry watchers think that it is HD-DVD allaince's battle to lose...
I cannot imagine how good it makes we feel that Sony is looking like loser in this one....

Guys my son was looking at what is better he found some site on his comp with a PS3 and an XBOX360 on 2 t.v's and they was saying that the 360 (full version) is a little better than the PS3 apart from the blu-ray thing

hard to say, as no released games for ps3 yet, so can only test prerelease... ...and it will take a few months before game developers really get to grips with it...

Had the xbox 360 for a while, well impressed with the graphics, and the fact that the controllers are wireless, I only usse it for games nothing else, not played it for ages though, be interesting to see how the PS3 fares against the 360 though.

Not just Sony but most Japanese electronic companies not called Toshiba.
Looking at the products I would say that Panasonic have as much to lose as Sony. A quick search shows that Sony used their experience with a blue laser computer drive, and Panasonic are making optical assemblies.
With all three companies of the tape format war on the same side you would think they have the market sown up.

Panasonic are capable of surviving should it go tits up. Sony probably aren't, esp with the losses they've been having to swallow lately...

Clearly not a gamer at heart ;) When you are bored stupid, and you have a big desk, nice rig (PC in my case), a force feedback racing wheel and pedals and a game like Live for Speed (http://www.liveforspeed.net/), then come back to me and say its crap! ;D
On the Blu-Ray Disc (henceforth known as BD) vs HD-DVD subject... BD is the better format for 2 reasons:
1) Larger storage capacity. Blue laser = smaller wavelengths = more data crammed in one place
2) Blue laser means that the storage capacity can reach a theoretical 200GB per disk.
3) Its got a cool name! (I know I said 2 reasons but I couldn't resist)
The cons:
- New production techniques mean a massive outlay on production lines
- EXPENSIVE!
- Headed by Sony.
HD-DVD uses current red lasers and has reached it max capacity with HD-DVD. So theoretically and practically, BD is the only forseeable option for the future.
As Theo has pointed out however. Warner Bro's studios have developed a chip that is able to read both formats, which will no doubt make the next gen format war fizzle out if it takes off (as it rightly should).
-
Not entirely sure that HD will take off in same way that digital TV or DVD has.....
-
I agree with ya there. It will get there but very slowly. It's incredibly early days at the moment - only Sky do HD subscriptions (with not very many channels at that!), theres very few HD movie releases and all the TV's and players are mega expensive.

I think it will be evolutionary upgrade for the masses, and this is precisely Sony's problem. This year is the year of the flat TVs for living room, and many may be tempted with a HD 'package', and as BD is too late to market, I think it may just miss the boat.
Added to that, Sony's past inability to market anything, and relying on its (now tarnishing) brand image, I would be concerned if I was in the BD camp now...

Well looking at releases of hard ware.
There is a Samsung BR player, Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony player nearly ready to go but I think they are gambling on the PS3 being a success
-
really started summit here eh? ;D
decided not to buy - will wait as long as i can and take more in on the PS3 - Been impressed with what i have seen.
And if nearer the time of launch which is only 5 months - reviews are poor, games are poor i will go back to the 360 which will surely have dropped a fair bit in price.
Reality is i aint gonna get much time to play games before christmas anyway... :(

Can we have another vote in the poll;
Am I bovvered? :D

I mentioned using 360 as MCE Extender earlier. Original XBOX can also be used as an extender as well...

Wonder if theres a way of accessing media on an xp system then or does it only work with media centre?

mce only.
Though with certain software on XBOX, you can map drives and play media files on XBOX from your XP PC.

Xbox as NAS would be cool, except it's so loud.

The Xbox and the 360 have ethernet ports, which can link up to any windows PC and read/transfer files to and from them. Thats how I transferred all my bits to mine. My xbox was my pride and joy - never used any disks except when i got new DVD's. Xboxes pretty much ARE media centres as opposed to extenders. Well they are if you get them mod chipped and install your own dashboard :D

Hey, might be on to something here! How about setting up an old Xbox as a PVR?! Only hardware you would need is a USB MPEG 2 or 4 converter and an adapter to plug it into a game controller port. You could set it to automatically turn on, and if you had a usb infrared then you could make it turn on the digital cable, set the channel, etc.
Then you could also access it from your PC, unlike current PVR's - at least the cheap ones.

All talk of chipping xbox is dodgy ground. Thread locked.
