Around 1965 it would appear ....

The former UK practice of using "Halt" or "Slow" at Major Road Ahead signs was discontinued in 1965 at the recommendation of the Worboys Committee.[14] Instead of replacing all the old "Halt" signs with the new Vienna Convention "Stop" sign, "Give Way" became the standard sign at UK priority junctions.

Although there is a reference to 1975 and the circles .... right down the bottom ...

It was a question on the TV and I said round before they showed that answer, and when no 'circle' option was shown I thought they had made a mistake...... ::) ::) ::)

In my defence..............I have no defence, neither can I think of a Stop sign around here anyway...... :-X :-X

UK uses "Stop" signs very infrequently, far more common is the "Give Way" - Triangular sign

I see 2 stop signs every time I go out... One at the end of my road and another 10 yards away at the end of the next road :y

But then these roads were originally USAF territory ::)

It's the only UK sign that's this shape - apparently so that you can see it's a stop sign from the opposite sign as well  ???
