I've had quotes for a spare key of £150 upwards. Is there any way to get one cheaper? I have a key from a previous Omega I had, but it seems that is no use.
Any thoughts?

I know it was four years ago but i paid only £160 for two new keys and had them programmed into my car.and new pass card for my mig...so i think that for just one key is expensive...

Get horseshoe incl blank mmobiliser chip of ebay - less than £10.
Get key cut to original (local friendly locksmith) - cost? cheap - don't know as mine was cut foc
Get used fob off ebay (make sure same manufacturer as original) - £20
Get programmed to car (need car pass + tech2) - The boy on here did mine
Total cost less than £50 :y
-
I have a used fob - how do i tell its the same as the original manufacturer?
-
Check the pcb mate :y

Excuse the ignorance.

Printed Circuit Board . Open up your old key & your current one & compare the manufacturer & serial numbers. :y

Do both the manufacturer and serial numbers have to match, or just the manufacturer?
-
I bought a new remote this morning from a local locksmith.
Cost £66, coded to the car.
Whilst he had the tech2 connected, I had the spare, working but nothing to do with my car, coded so that it now works.
At that sort of price I can't see the point of arsing about with used parts, especially when they're a bit delicate
-
PFL fobs are fairly robust. FL ones are poor.
I tend to buy fob from dealer, about £27 trade. Key and transponder from egay, £10 delivered. Obviously, progamming costs me nothing ;D
-
im about to go go for a second key too ..ive only got one..and no vx pass..gonna cost a bomb.

The customer after me couldn't find her car pass. Adds another £20. Still way cheaper than Vauxhall, and they don't do it while you wait.

Have a word with that Marks DTM fella, up in West Bridgford. He'll sort you out cheaper than any dealer :y. He knows his onions, so I've heard ;D

I would say so, but shop around, as they do vary in price. MDTM may be able to recommend local dealers. Or drop AndyC a PM, see if its viable and cost effective from him :)

Does the transponder thing in the new key fob have to be [virgin] or can a used one be cleared [formatted]
In other words ..a second hand key from a breaker..then just get a new blade.and get it to a tech II :y
-
Depends on if its been near shit code readers
-
Second thought..can the cars ecu[tec II] be told that [forget all this code crap] nobody wants to nick my car cos its crap.so from now on when i put the proper key in the barrel...START
-
Not via Tech2.
Also, you'd find your insurance would take a hike

Think yourself lucky. I bought a second key for her Smart - never thought to check there were 2 keys with it when we bought it :( - it came to around £190 :'( :'(
I believe a new key for a Merc is now around £220
-
Been to see main dealer and ordered car pass. Now for sorting a new key

There are two types;
Manufacturer: Delphi Automotive Systems
Additional: Megamos T-AM 433.92Mhz this is on GLS (without factory alarm)
Manufacturer: Kiekert AG
Additional: TX Type5470 433Mhz
So mine a 2002 cd so it should be the second one..well its the first one.. MEGAMOS
Does it matter which one i buy.

My 2002 CDX Saloon has an alarm and is also the Megamos T-AM. If this is the type you now have (and it works!) then you need the same one for your new key. :y
-
You must get right fob, and you can't go on the name on back for FL
Best to get fob from dealer. About 27 on trade IIRC
-
Think this one is for theboy. :y I had a key fob turn up today and the internal green board is exactly the same
part number/make/and mhz as mine. so i gave it a new batt.put my horse shoe and transponder onto it..
I now open car door with key in lock.and the key starts the car fine
why can i not sync the key in ignition barrel
-
the key is mechanical, hence opening the door, and turning the ignition
the small black chip only talks to the immobiliser and allows the car to start.
the remote fob is not programmed to your car, that needs tech2 to add it to your car's ecu.
You cannot self program them with the resync procedure.

What Jimbob says.
Post 1996 keys are made up of 3 components:
Mechanical - needs to be cut so it mechanically works in the lock
Transponder (in horseshow on post 1998 cars, embedded in key on 96 and 97 cars), needs to be programmed to immobiliser via Tech1/Tech2
Remote Fob ("plugs" into horseshoe on post 1998 cars, seperate 'blipper' on 96 and 97 cars), needs to be programmed to the central locking (poverty specced) or alarm (most models) ECU via Tech1/Tech2.
-
1994 and 1995 cars use the IR system, and are completely different to the 1996 onwards RF based ones...
-
Thanks jimbob and theboy :y That makes it clear to me..I will take a trip up the A46 to see mark. :y
