Martin - you are at least 30 thousand feet above my head.....
Would ask that you ensure that you are talking copywrite OK material as far as the forum in general is concerned here, otherwise you are sailing against forum rules and would require deletion....

TBH I use VideoLan (VLC) player for everything now .. its dead simple and seems to play anything i throw at it without demanding millions of codecs....

Only one place you can get DV format AVIs from and that is via firewire from a video camera, or after editing - so that clears everything

DV is the format that comes of video cameras B, the list are codecs (little convertors type of thing) that windows uses to display different types of video so not a copyright problem.

Just wondering ... if you have too many codecs installed ? could they be fighting each other ?? ... daft question .. have you added/installed anything since the editor last worked properly ??

Unfortunately can't remember, I think I will uninstall a few and see what happens.
May reinstall VS9

The drive my AVIs are on had dropped from DMA 5 to PIO
